View Full Version : Slightly odd betta

The other day, I went into the local pet store and wandered down to look at the fish. I ended up going home with my second betta, Shimmer. As I have no idea how to post pictures here, he can be viewed here...

Shimmer is a very pale betta, a very pale gold. I guess you could call him white. His fins shade from palest gold to a translucent red-streaked orange, randomly dotted with red. He's not fully mature yet, so his fins aren't as spectacular is they will be later. He's silver-eyed, though I would swear that his eyes flash different colors. Shimmer has an A+ in people-watching, but he is the shyest critter I know. Hides behind the plants if I twitch the wrong way

One thing I noticed when I got Shimmer into his tank is that he has a mutation or defect with his ventral fins. Instead of the usual two, he has four. Two of them are normal, though thin and very light in color. The second set is darker, and is visibly crumpled. I have no idea what might have caused that, and I am hoping it's not a sign of a more serious problem. I am really, really fond of this unusual and beautiful betta

He's a good looking boy. I've got a Betta with a split ventral. His doesn't curl though, it's just split so it looks like he's got three ventrals. It happens when breeding for form, colour, and such because of the selective inbreeding. Wouldn't be a show Betta but they're still beautiful fish with great personalities.

I've got several Betta and they're all different in form and colour but they're all awesome little fish with huge personalities no matter if I got 'im at Walmart or ordered from a breeder. If you're interested in seeing some of them check out my YouTube link in my sig or search the Betta forum for posts made by me. Take some more shots of your Betta and post 'em, love seeing them!

The link to the image is http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/325/6/f/pale_beauty___betta_shimmer_by_ultrarodimus-d33bn2q.jpg

to put it in a post just wrap the link with {img}link{/img}, instead of {} use [].
Also there is an 'insert image' button that you can enter the link into, which is probably easier.

Am hoping this link works...

A better picture of Shimmer. His ventrals are actually fringed; each fin has the main, long tip and about three trailing tips He looks pale golden in most light, but he's actually white in body, with fins shading from palest gold to orange, streaked and spotted with red. An absolutely gorgeous betta male. Right now he's apparently building a practice bubble nest in his tank. There are bubbles everywhere

And this is my other betta, Nova. His full name is Supernova, but I just call him Nova for short. With that tail shape he's somewhere between spade tail and veil tail... An odd look, but he makes it work. His sides flash blue, green, and purple depending on how the light hits his scales, and you can see the blue flash on his dorsal fin. He's a gorgeous, blue-eyed fish ^_^ Nova is also very active... he darts around his tank like a finned red projectile. It's funny to watch sometimes, especially when he can't decide which direction he wants to go. He turns from one side to the other quickly, and you can almost hear the frustrated yell of "I don't know which way to go!!!"

I'm actually getting a tattoo inspired by this guy... It will have scales in black light ink. I will have pictures when I get it done.

*has to chuckle* Every time I think I have Shimmer figured out he pulls something else out of his fin. He was darting around the tank taking bites off a particularly large bloodworm when I noticed that he's a double veil... his caudal fin is split in two. I didn't notice before because he carries his fins very low-key; the "flare at everything" impulse hasn't kicked in yet.

And this morning I realized that I have two very patriotic fish... One red and one white. *sings* O Canadaaaaaaa...
