i ended up buying a peacock eel at petsmart for the 55g. i was bored and asked the worker if there was any left, and they had one left. so far, he is outgoing and tolerates all of my current fish. i also read of a few sites that they do fine with tetras and catfish, angels, etc. are there any fish that they wouldnt get along with, or are they community?

I have read on the net that they will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. I dont know if its true or not, just something read.

even if thats true, im fine. the smallest things are black neons and they are pretty fast. he also has a small mouth, its long and pointed, so id imagine im safe.

I've had a fire eel in my 72 for over a year - he looks like a fish eating machine but he's never so much as looked crosseyed at any of my other fish.

He may not be able to eat anything now, but as he gets bigger it is probably just a matter of time before he gets hungry enough to go for other fish in the tank.

I saw one at the lfs that was longer than a ruler and about 5 inches BIG, he was with one 2 inch fish and the fish was nipping at him!

in that case, i'll keep him in the 55g for a year or 2. if i find him after other fish, he can have his own tank.

thanks for the info

Mine could swallow my cories whole - he eventually will probably do just that -but I never feed him live food so *fingers crossed* he may be fine with them for a bit more

Him and my tiger botia take turns chasing each other out from under stuff!
