View Full Version : Floating apple snail?

The apple snail in our betta tank has a habit of ending up floating at the top of the tank, with its shell opening facing downward. It seems pretty helpless when its in that position, so we tend to grab it and put it somewhere where it can latch on to something, but sooner or later it'll end up back floating again. It almost appears as if it has an air bubble trapped inside its shell.

Is this normal behavior for apple snails or is it a problem? If so, is there anything we can do about it?

It's pretty normal. All the ones I bought were doing that in the store. I'm not sure what does it, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Perhaps it is just gassy? lol

They pull air into the shell and use it to float. They can expel it anytime they want. That is how my snail caught a guppy once and ate it. Death from above.

In nature it is probably a good way to get to new feeding grounds.

Completely normal. They have lungs, so when they want to float, they will. They're never helpless. They will also blow bubbles out of their syphon to sink back down again. They're just having some fun.

Some people theorize that they also prefer to "sleep" in that position.
So long as it's not getting too bounced around by the filter outflow, I never bothered fixing mine.
