I've a small story to tell....20 days of not fun....

So I ended up tossing a few chemical items into the trash about a few weeks back.....

A while ago I purchased a PH Down bottle to lower the PH of my water and then gave up, but never pitched the bottle. Well, it was floating aorund and looked exactly like the same bottle as my water conditioner...you all see where this is going....

:scry: :scry: :scry:

30% water change ... I lost 4 of my Zebras :scry:

Luckily I had my 29 gallon just about cycled, so I netted the remaining fish and dropped them into the new tank, thus saving their lives.

I then dropped the water conditioner in several places in the affected tank, and prepared conditioned water. I took out all the filters, ceramic media, bio balls, etc and rinsed them in the declorinated water and dropped them into the new tank. Did the same with the plants, and finally the castle.

After a few days, I drained the affected tank, removed the substrated and rinsed it throrughly in declorinated water, and then replaced all the plants, castle, etc and used the substrate to fill in where I was missing some in the new tank. After about a week, all was looking well and the remaining zebras were alright, and doing well.

Though one kept chasing the other around the tank way too much, the chased fish looked really stressed out, and I was affraid he would die of fear. After about another 3 days of that, I went and bought enough Zebras to bring the count up to 8, then kept it that way for 1 week. I realized by then my tank was fully cycled, so I replaced my bulb in the tank because it was really dinky, and waited yet another few days.

I added 5 Rosey Barbs and so far they are doing well, though they are little piggies and like to eat just about everything lol.

So, atm, I have 8 male zebra danios and 5 female rosey barbs lol. Don't ask....I'm hoping nature doesn't "find a way" and I end up with Zebra Barbs or Rosey Danios lol.

Anyways, stupidity past, and though it cost a few lives, I learned, a lot, and was glad I was able to save the rest of the fish like I did.

I've done several more water changes without issue. I do 10-20% twice a week and all seems well, the fish are really curious of just about everything I am doing.

Lets just say I don't want to do that again! That was horrible!

that sucks.

I almost made a bad mistake a few months ago too. i had tetra water conditioner and bacteria supplement, and i thought they BOTH were conditioner. after one bottle was done, i used the bacteria supplement for a month thinking it was conditioner. Lost NO fish using straight tapwater

I did something like that once, I dumped water clarifier in instead of conditioner. Didn't loose any fish thank goodness.

Oh well, that's how we learn, through our mistakes.

 Yes... i remember a similar "incident" with my plant fertilizer.

I also remember when my g/f read the directions on the bottle of Ich treatment wrong and i used about 3x the recommended dosage.. Talk about green water... luckily for me i realized what i had done about 10 mins later and saved the fish.. all the plants on the other hand were lost.... except for hornwart.. (but does that stuff really ever die?)
