i FINALLY got some nitrites and nitrates.

been about 2 months since i setup the tank, its a 10g with a power filter. added a rainbow shark when i first got it.

ammonia levels raised slow at first then crazy fast. i did lots of water changes, about 2-3 per week. i wasnt getting any nitrite or nitrate reading until just now. i was starting to think the testers didnt work or something was wrong. nitrite was off the chart, and nitrate high also. i just a 30% water change to bump it back down.

im still getting a slight ammonia reading, but MUCH less than what i was expecting, i think the ammonia will be down to 0 in a few days or so.

i allready know my rainbow shark will outgrow this 10 g. and im excited about getting a big huge tank for him in the near future. he is maybe just over 2 inches at most from mouth to tailfin.

i am wanting to add another fish to the tank, something like a red wag or some kind of swordtail, i just want to know if its safe to add a (yes, one) fish to the tank now that the biological filter is taken a good hold.

yep, but 2 is better so the ones not lonely. just make sure you can get a bigger tank when the rainbow shark gets big

...yes...by all means go get another fish...don't get more than 3 for 10g at any one time...

...and know that the rainbow may get very territorial with other fish.

The best mates for a rainbow sharrk (in my opinion) are danios. They are fast and will not get hurt or stressed from the RS chasing them.

Great suggestion. I have some giant dannios that I can't imagine a rainbow shark catching.

mine just leave everyone alone, no matter what size or speed

cocoa, you have the freaks of the rainbow shark kingdom. They are supposed to be territorial and aren't supposed to breed in captivity. Wait!! I've just figured it all out! Yours are happier because they DID breed! I mean, how grumpy would you be if you didn't...ummm...you know, for your entire life!

lol, my rainbows are pretty weird. why they bred i have 0 idea. the only reason i got 2 is i wanted to see how they would act around eachother in a 55g
