hey everone...i'm jumping ship

i'm leaving AquariumPros forum and coming over here. hope that this place is better. they don't allow links to supply companies as it's "free advertising for those companies." so they deleted my posts where i was asking questions about products. that and they aren't helpful so much as they are "have you done this or that" and "that's not going to work you should do this because ti worked for me" so i came here.

i have a 55 gallon freshwater tank that i just redecorated yesterday. yesterday it had one 5-6 inch bala shark, one 5-6 inch tinfoil barb, and one 4 inch chinese algae eater. let's just say that those that helped me clean old decorations that were reused didn't actually wash and rinse completely and now my ammonia levels are extremely high so i must let the tank cycle again before i put any new fish in seeing as my three previously stated fish have died from the ammonia.

i'm going to check levels in a couple weeks and i'm looking at restocking with the following:

bala shark - 1
hammers blue lobster - 1
tiger barb - 5 or 6
snail - 1

i'm not a fan of pleco's so i won't be putting one of those in there and i'm not sure if i want to get another chinese algae eater or not...probably not though.

I hope you like it better here, too, but these forums are always on guard for spammers because we get so many. We have to make sure it doesn't appear that we are selling. We post links here all the time pointing people to this or that product and asking opinions.

oh no i'm definitely no spammer. i simply posted a link to the type of filtration system i have on my tank and the type of crystals filter media and asked a question about it. they deleted both.

how often do you change your crystals or filter media in your filtration systems? i've had the same crystal in it for about 2 months now and it's going to have to take out a lot of ammonia...probably over 4 parts/million in a 55 gallon tank.

I don't have a canister and I think if you posted that question in the proper thread you'd get some good answers. Many of the folks here pay no attention to the Introduction thread I'm afraid.

Maybe the Technical thread would be a good spot to post?

I don't use crystals, but I use Biomax and I never change it. Most oft he bacteria products are not going to break down over time and if you remove them you will be removing most of your bacteria., and will have to cycle our tank again. For this reason I never change mine. Instead I rinse them in tank water to get out any large debre when i change out my fine filter media in my canister.
