I found a LFS that just changed ownership and they are selling off all their Swahala wood. I got a nice sized piece for my 10g for $2. I've started soaking it. The guy at the store said to soak it for a week so it doesn't make my water look like tea. I can already see that was a good idea as the soaking water is tea colored already.
Is there any other things I should know about this wood before putting it in my tank? Is a week long enough? Should I boil it? I've read various things about preparating wood for a tank. Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated.

Boiling it could speed up the process.
And at $2, i would have cleaned them out!

good deal! i remember one of the times when one of the superpets moved a door down, they had a 50% off sale on all equipment and live stock. i bought tons of fish and got some canister filters and sold them for a profit. i also had my old nanoreef set-up (the first one years back) and got a protein skimmer and a cave for the starfish. i cleaned out most of their mopani driftwood

You need not boil wood you buy because it's already been processed. However, it does help it sink and also helps get rid of the tannins. It should not boil but simmer slowly for several hours.

Ooooo yes, its imported!!! all the way from Africa. I will be back to get somemore to save for my NEXT tank since I can't get more fish in my 10g. BooHoo.... Buying wood just isn't as fulfilling as buying fish. LOL!

At this time of year in Texas just setting it out on the porch is pretty much like simmering it. HAHA!

No kidding. I had to mow today, and i was sweating like crazy. Its so humid outside, you could cut the air with a knife.
At one of my lfs they manzanita branches that were several feet long for $50. What rip-off because, there are tons of those bushes on the property that I live
on. Manzanitas are large bushes native to California with cool looking branches.
