Dad got back to Auckland yesterday after spending 2 days in Tokyo. So he went car shopping today and has come up with three options.
Audi R8 - MORE INFO HERE ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.])
Porsche 911 Turbo
Maserati GranTurismo when it arrives
Dad prefers the Audi and I like the Porsche. Question is, would you have the Audi R8 over a Porsche 911 Turbo or Maserati GranTurismo

None of the above. For a quarter million, I'd get a souped up Toyota Supra that would beat all of the above, and donate the excess $150,000 to charity, lol.
I drive a Ford and a Kia...so what do I know?:28:
My Uncle had a very nice Mercedes though...and I suppose of the 3 I'd lean towards the Porche...

Id rather have a Pontiac GTO with a hemi than a little 4 banger.

Uh....go read up on tuned Toyota Supras...lol
I highly doubt your hemi can put out 1k horsepower from 6 turbocharged cylinders. Supra engines are legendary because they can take anything you throw at them. Nitrous + turbocharging would blow most engines, but not this 6-inline :)
As for Asian cars, there's a reason Toyota is now bigger than GM :)

Yes, because of stupid movies like fast and the furious. Every rich american kid has his mommy and daddy go buy him a honda civic. They spend thousands of dollars making it go fast. They put on those stupid spoliers, drop it to the ground, and put on those mufflers that make it sound like a kid has pinned a credit card to his bike spokes.
1600 horsepower. Meet Mr. American Muscle.

i have to go with chrona on this one. supras can take alot of punishment road wise. put all the wingding spoilers and sideskirts on a supra and they are AWESOME. The only muscle cars i like are lowriders.
the mufflers on tuners PWN muscle cars ones. my neighbor has a shelby and it gets so dam annoying at night when he drives it and the mufflers and engine are cooking up a storm.
...come on now! How cute is this??? :malelovies:

First of all, my vote goes for the R8, much more exotic than the 911 turbos. Having driven several 911 Turbos, Cayennes and GT4's, they drive nice but, other than the Cayenne, there's something missing.
Now, I will take an Asian/European car over an American Big 3 anyday. Show me one US built and designed car that can out perform even the most basic Asian/European car. Yes a vette will kick a VW GTI's as on a straight away, but wait until the first corner. Most European 4 bangers (and I don't mean the basic crap that makes it to our shores) will out perform most V6s and V8s from Chrysler, Ford and GM while getting better mileage.
Although I will buy a European/Asian car over any US car, the Ford Mustang is and always will be my favourite car, and the sound of the GTs (not even gonna mention the Cobra's) V8 is heaven. Just the right sound for the car. In the 2 years I owned my GT, I rarely used the stereo system because the cars sound alone gave me goosebumps. The sound of many exhaust systems on smaller tuned cars, they are not just "ricers" because many Chevy, Pontiac, Ford owners have them on their cars as well, are annoying as hell. But not nearly annoying as those exhaust systems on many pick up trucks now a days, you know, the ones that make it sound like you have a dozen 18 wheelers driving by.

So you are saying that you would rather have an engine that sounds like a little kid on a bike, than have an engine that sounds like (and is ) a V8?

Engine sounds and size apart, an engine and its hp/torque are only as good as the transmission and driver that can bring the power to the road.

Right, because that car is much less ludricrous looking with the massive stacked turbo that blocks half the windshield, lol.
I'm not talking about your average ricer with a stock engine and all bling, I'm talking about a real racing machine with the full package, turbo, intercooler, brembo brakes, etc, etc. One, the handling on that thing would suck (if you could even pull a sharp turn without the weight of the superchargers snapping the engine right off the mount, lol). Two, it doesn't even look remotely drivable. And I'm willing to bet it hasn't even been fully dyno tested to 1600 hp. So maybe that can beat a Supra in a straight up drag race (though I'm skeptical). But that's all that's good for. Maybe if all street roads were straight....

BTW, I'll be getting my Golf 4 next month and will be putting in a better exhaust system, I'm thinking about the Eisenman system or one from VW. This is the Eisenman system ...

Now, what teenage self proclaimed "street racer" races on anything but a straight away. There are very few SERIOUS ricer owners. Alot of them would probobly smoke some american cars. However, on the straight away, nothing beats american muscle.
I dont support asian car companies. There are some american car companies that i wont go near either. Like caddilac (namely for their poor decision on making "escalades"). I am a ford/chevy/dodge/pontiac man. Nothings gonna change that. If somone offerd me a "souped up" ricer, id sell it and by a REAL car.

The initial post was towards Unleashed, and from my understanding, his dad wants to get a car (budget = roughly 1/4 million) for everyday fun driving, not straight up drag racing (or he would not have picked this cars) Thus, we're not talking about some silly wannabe ricer. We're talking spending 80k in upgrades to make a stock Supra into a nasty beast (and I mean a full package, not just making it ridiculous for drags)
And what evidence do you have to make the claim that nothing beats American muscle on the straightway? ;)
As for the souped up comment, what do you call the muscle car you posted? Nothing more than a 37 year old souped up car, lol.

Actually you could just bring the car to a professional mod shop, but the real ricers with "souped up" (meaning interior and exterior parts that enhance performance) cars put just as much time into them as any serious American muscle car owners. It's not like ricer owners are from another planet, lol.
As for smoking that GTO, it doesn't give 0-60, 1/4 mile times, actual power to the wheels or any stats. It's pretty hard to determine what car beats what car just by looking at it. Claimed horsepower doesn't mean jack nowadays, and that 1600hp figure was probably calculated from the "claimed" horsepower boost of various mods (ie when a manufacturer for exhaust systems say it boots horsepower by 25%, as if it were that simple)
I'm fairly certain this car could beat it (or at least give it a run for the money) Note how it has drag tires. Much bigger than the ones on the GTO from the looks of it. 1600 hp doesn't mean anything if you can't put it to the ground.

First of all, i said American muscle owns the straightaway. Notice the curves? And second of all, i said that particular GTO, not any GTO.
Also, i belive the tires on the GTO are tubbed.

First of all, your GTO is heavily modified, if you were to invest the same amount of money and time into a Honda Civic or comparable car, you'd be surprised what you'd end up with and the time results on a straight away would be very comparable. The only difference is that you'd actually be able to see where you are going in the Civic .... :ezpi_wink1:

Performance aside, the looks of tuned import cars is just better. With the right body kits, you get similar lines to Ferraris or Lambos, etc, whereas American muscle cars always look big and clunky (and have that huge supercharger sitting in the middle) I guess that's my main beef. I mean, the fastest GTO in the above post just looks UUUUGGGLY, lol.

I see where you are going. There are quite a few sick looking tuners out there. However, i love the old feel of a muscle car. Thats my personal preferance. Id rather have a Hemi sticking out then have a hood scoop.
Anyway, if i had that kind of money, i would get the porche 911.

Porsche is such a common car in Auckland - so not exclusive
Maserati is 'smooth' looking.

Ok.
Here is my take one a few discussion mentioned earlier...........
Audi, 911, or Maserati...............I'd go 911.
Audi's are kinda junk nowadays. High end and exotic just means MORE things to break.........especially coming form an Audi. Yes, VW owns both Porche and Audi, but I'd still take the 911.
Getting a tuned Supra is the best investment ever! I would take that over any kinda GTO or anything like that any day of the week! Hands down! The Toyota engine is SO solid, so reliable, and can really take what you throw at it. And.........the STOCK manual transmission that comes in the twin turbo Supras can handle around 1000 HP!
What else..........
There is a HUGE difference between a kid with a honda civic with a garbage can muffler, and a really tuned import car.
Also, comparing the GTO to the 350Z is really not fair. I don't think that the 350Zs are really all that great. Not really what they used to be at least.
K.
That's my 10cents.
Yes, VW owns both Porche and Audi,
Yes, Audi is part of the VW group (as is Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda, Buggati and Bently), but Porshe is buying 20% of VW and possibly more down the road.

911 turbo for sure:
911 is:
-Faster... much, much faster. Better acceleration, handling, top speed, braking, etc. And dont get fooled by the 0-60 ot 0-100 figures. Try it on a track to see the real difference... its also a 4wd like the Audi
-Better built. Yes, better than Audi
-Sounds nice
-Cooler, its an exotic supercar
-Have you ever heard someone WOW on an audi? Rarely i bet. How about Porsches?
Audi RS8 is:
-A safer car
-More comfortable
-More room for all the family
-Still frightengly fast
-Could handle rough surfaces better

Right now he is doing contract work for a private equity firm. Pretty much one week worth of work for a big investment bank will bring in enough to buy a decent italian car.

I believe that you are confusing the Audi R8 with the RS8/S8. The RS8/S8 is the higher performance variant of the Audi A8 sedan. The Audi R8 is an exclusive (only 20 cars built per day) 2 seater that hasn't even hit the dealerships yet.
