View Full Version : 100g build

We picked up a used 100g tank last Thursday. We moved into our new house on Friday.... busy weekend!

Today we decided to get started on our 100g SW build...

The tank measures 48x18x24 and is on a custom stand. We will be getting new lights and power heads in the next 2-3 days. The tank already has an overflow system ready for our plumbing and we will be using a 30g sump under the tank.

We have a skimmer from our 70g SW that I may use in the short term until I find a bigger one. It is rated for 200g so it should do for now. I think we are going to keep the 70g running too... not sure.

Today we added 150lbs of silica sand and filled it about half way with fresh SW.

Tomorrow we will be moving our 70g reef from the old house (which we still have until Friday) and begin stocking the 100g.

I took a picture of the half full tank, nothing exciting. I am making the move with the 70g today so tonight I should have some pictures.

On a side note, we moved the 35g yesterday and it went well!

Congrats, cant wait to see it established(you're right nothing much to look at during the build phase).

I moved a 75g last week and all went well, I wasnt shocked as I know how to do it(moved x-country w/ a new world monster cichlid tank in the early 90's).
Side funny- dont go to an LFS 4 days after its set up and ask for fish, they will tell you that because the tank was moved it is no longer established and thus in cycle, yeah never laughed so hard in my life, needless to say I tore up my fish club card with them but it was darn funny when the OWNER told me that. I do think I laughed a little too hard at her.

Is it a reef ready tank?

Is this a glass tank?

Congrats on the upgrade!

Is it a reef ready tank?

Yes, it has a built in over-flow shelf. I have not set up my sump yet as I need to purchase a pump.

Anyone have any advise on selecting a pump?

Is this a glass tank?

Yes it is all glass, and was a pig to get down the stairs to the basement!

The move with the 70g went well. We got everything into the basement and placed all of the LR into a pile along the back wall of the tank and all of the coral rocks along the front side. I left everything there overnight so the water could clear up and allow me to safely place the rocks into place.

All of the livestock made the trip safely and acclimated to the 100g no problem.

Last night I built the reef but I am not sure if I am 100% happy with it yet. Most of the coral have opened up by this morning even though I only have one Koralia creating flow and an Aquaclear filter cleaning up the water.

Today I hope to pick up the lights and the other four Koralias we will be running.

I only have a picture of the half full cloudy tank. My wife is a photographer so she has her camera tied up after her shoot yesterday. I have no idea how to post my photos on here, she helps me out with that. I will take some photos soon, I promise...

Is it a single or dual overflow? I would go with a magdrive 9.5 for a return. I run a mag 9.5 on our reef ready 75 and the overflow keeps up with the pump running wide open. Its even been run dry for 20 minutes when the overflow plugged up and didn't burn up or get noisy

I will get some pictures of it, hopefully tonight. The is a shelf that runs for 3' along the back wall. There are three overflow pipes that run out of it. The guy I bought the tank from said he had three so there are back up tubes in case something was to block up one of the others.
