For any of you people that own cardinal tetras I was wondering what you keep the PH of your tank at?

Don't worry about the pH or you will be kicking yourself for messing around with it. Cardinals that have been living at the LFS for a while are adjusted to the local water conditions. The most important thing with cardinals (and many wild-caught species) is a SLOW acclimation. Ie, acclimate for temp for 30 min, then pour 1/2 cup water into the bag every 10 minutes for a 1-2 hours

Furthermore, all of the "good" (meaning stable) buffers are phosphate based, which is a nono for planted tanks.

ahaha...sounds good, I was just curious to see if anyone else had a PH in the mid 7's with cardinals and how they were making out.
Just out of untreated well water I shouldn't have any problems with phosphates should I?

It depends. Just have the LFS test your water parameters (untreated water - not water through the softening system)

My neons and all my fish live quite happily in 7.6.
