I'm trying to decide if the kribensis is a suitable fish in my tank instead of the cockatoo apisto. Tankmates are a dwarf gourami, lemon tetras, and three lined corys.

I'm having a hard time finding a cockatoo apisto locally, but the kribensis seems easy to find. I'd probably just get 1 female kribensis.

What size tank is it and what is the water parameters?

29 gallon, 8.0 PH, very soft water (hardness 1 or less), and alkalinity is like 250. Oh and temp is 77-78 F.

The LFS water is similar to mine, around a 7.5 PH, soft water, etc.

Definitely go with the krib, apistos require a lower ph.

Hmm everything I'd read about the cockatoo was that it was unique in the sense it handled 8.0 PH water fine. (in fact, the library on this very site lists PH range from 6.0 to 8.0 for the cockatoo)

That said since I'm having a hard time finding one I may not have a choice anyways. :/ Thanks for the input, I figured the Krib would be compatible with my tank but I wanted to double check as the information I found on it was sorta piecemeal.

with that ph i would go with krib, they can really handle a wide range of parameters. However, if you throw in enough driftwood to drop the ph some, like down to 7.5, the cockatoo should be fine. That is the PH that mine is in right now and he is doing just fine and colored up nice.

The krib would be fine if you can not find an apisto. You could do a Bolivian ram if you wanted as well.

you may find that the kribs beat up/kill the cories...I have seen Kribs fight each other and they are very violent, with the eyes seeming to be the favorite target.......I have kribs in a community tank with upper water column fish and they are fine, but they will NOT tolerate any incursions into the bottom 4"...and this is in a heavily planted 40 gallon high. And if you were to be lucky enough to get a pair that could keep from abusing each other long enough to mate....they would definetly kill the cories, and any other fish unlucky enough to stray near the cave.
