Java ferns dying

I have some java ferns that are attached to bits of driftwood under medium light. For some reason, the leaves started turning brown and dying off. There is now no green on the plants except for a few tiny plantlets at the tips of the dead leaves. The tank has never been fertilized

Does anyone know the cause of this? What are the chances of the plant recovering from the rhizome?

Also, How long does one of those tiny plantlets take to grow out?
