My male red ceibal has still been kinda fussy when it comes to food so i figured id just throw the whole buffet at him till he found something that he wanted to eat. I tried hikari with little result tetra crisps, omega one blood worms (sorta liked it but never really got excited) a few different flakes. He was sorta eating all of them and today i tried some omega 1 marine pellets with garlic left over from when i had my saltwater setup, and he went ballistic. Ive never seen a fish eat so violently. Im really glad to see him eating again but i do have to wonder if i am risking adverse side effects by feeding him a marine formula?

Could just be the garlic, garlic is an appetite stimulant to alot of fish. Marine foods normally just contain higher levels of vitamin C and lower or no copper. I would still try garlic soaks on his regular foods to see if it makes the difference.

would feeding the marine formula be harmful, i need to get rid of it one way or another anyway. I might get a garlic soak but none are availible locally. I think ill continue with what he will eat until i can get something proper at least.

Marine food is fine for FW water fish. Some people swear their fish do better on it.

well if he will eat it after the last 2 weeks of him not really eating he can have it. Ill feed that twice a day until i run out of it and toss in some treats and such, glad hes lookin like hes going to make a turnaround for me. He also seems immediately less shy and is constantly out and about searching for more food. I think he would eat constantly now if i let him.

No danger in feeding a marine formula to FW fish. FW fish food is typically made from ingredients that come from the ocean anyway, there may be minor ingredient differences but definitely not something that's toxic.

If the fish really likes that food I'd recommend New Life Spectrum (NLS) Thera+A. It contains a lot of garlic, helps prevent internal parasites, and is a very high quality food for all fish. It's my staple food and the fish go nuts for it. Garlic is an excellent appetite stim as stated above and has health benefits for the fish (and us for that matter.)

Great advice from Sark. NLS Thera+A is an excellent food. I've had great results using it for several years now.

well hes getting pretty agressive toward feeding time. Not really mean to the other fish but the other fish do well to get the h*** out of the way. Hes starting to exhibit the colors he used to have and will now take some other foods. Hes still not interested in the hikari pellets. At first i thought it was the size of the pellets but after watching him destroy my last mystery snail i dont think size is an issue. I think tomorrow i might try to find a couple earthworms to give him. I didnt notice how skinny he was getting until he started eating again. He looks like a scarecrow with a potbelly. High protein high fat for him for a bit. Maybe a couple little crayfish too. It is nice to see him back to his old, i wont say agressive but boisterous self.
