I persuaded my mum to let me keep the 84gal. tank that I bought off my boss and have spent most of this morning setting it up. The water is still too murky for you to make anything out but I have set the filter up so it should clear soon.

I plan on doing a fishless cycle and adding some south American cichlids all at once.

Why is the tank murky? What are you using for substract?

In the event you can not find pure ammonia there, you could really add some fish to get the cycle going. A tank this large doesn't get near the toxic levels you see in small tanks. I don't think my ammonia levels ever got over .25 in my 55 gallon using fish.

I know with cichlids you want to keep aggression down by adding all at once but if need be, you can always change the decorations around some when adding new stock.

Just a thought.

is it cloudy because of substrate? else something may be whack

Its cloudy because of the sand substrate, I am using play sand and it said that it had been washed so i didn't wash it oops.

I am not using pure ammonia hobbs i'm just gonna add pee to it until I get the reading of 5ppm because I won't have to worry about anything else that may be in the ammonia.

I did the same with my first tank, not washing the sand and I haven't had any problems and it did settle after a few days so I'm hoping that it will be fine.

I don't much wash gravel anymore either. It's easier to dump it in the tank and just do a couple large water changes.

ahhhhhhh.........what pee are you using? Not yours, I presume.

Fishless cycling with pee. As stated already, that is better then words could describe.

I only use a tiny bit of pee in such a big tank it is very diluted, plus the chemicals which smell will be the ones being broken down by the bacteria.

I dunno how she got cat pee, its easier to use your own, but it takes a lot of effort to hold back just to fill a tiny jar!
