My rainbows get very excited at feeding time. When I first put the food in, I often get splashed as they come up to get it. For the rest of the feeding, they typically swim around mid level, and then dart up to the surface for a bite. Often, I hear a noise, and I wonder if they're hitting the glass lid as they break the surface of the water. If so, are they hurting themselves? I have the tank filled to about an inch below the top. The whole tank is covered, so I don't have to worry about them jumping out, but I don't want them to get hurt. What do you think?

Could be. They're known jumpers. I don't even keep a lid on my tank but never had a problem other than one time when I went to pour some into a tank from a pail. They flew right over the tank, hit the wall and disappeared under the stand. *doh*

My SD's and paradise fish do that too. They don't seem to get hurt by it. Just keep an eye on them.
