This question pertains to fish of the same species, but are of totally different colors. I have finally decided to purchase (animal wise) one more Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. However, I would like a small variety in my tank and am inclined to get the one commonly known as White Skirt Tetra. I have 5 black skrits already, and since they are of the same genus and species, my question is then: will the black skirts treat the white skirt as another one of them? Thanks.

Oh. That's odd since they are the same species, but what do I know. thanks in advance. I will just get that black skrit then.

I believe that altho they are both tetra's they recognize each other by color. When I first added my white skirts, they chased the blacks constantly. I separated them... then added them back to the tank of blacks one at a time. They got along better this way but they continually are in the way of the black skirts trying to skoal. The blacks now swim over them, under them or anyway that they can but they will not swim together.
I do not like the white skirts at all and my luck they will live forever. :)

That goodness someone with experience responded because the fish selling guy at Petco would just say that they are fine. They mixed the white skirts and black skirts in the display tank and I know they are just trying to get more sales in when your incompatable fish kill each other.

Here's a picture of my tetras and rasbora's. Note the stupid white skirts just sitting in the middle of the tank screwing up everyones swarm. LOL See the black skirts going in one direction and the white skirts not knowing what direction they're even supposed to go.
You will see one long-finned danio with the rasbora's because he thinks he is one.

Amazing. I have never seen such an beautiful aquarium before. Seriously. All of my tetras are like those white skirt tetras. They just, well, float until I walk by and then congregate around the corner where I am at. Interesting behavior I must say. Well, if they don't school (which my fish rarely do anyways) then I might not get one. However, seeing that the fish does not attack the others, I might get one. All of my fish act independent and school only when I turn on the lights in the morning (and school for like 30 seconds until the realize what is going on). In the future, I hope to see similar results when I get a larger tank sometime.
