Hello all. I didn't put this on the introduction forum as I didn't think anywould would see it. I've been looking at posts on this forum for quite some time now to learn as much as I can from people about keeping a tank. I currently have a 14 gallon with 1 male CT betta, 3 cory cats, a baby bala (and I mean baby. He's about 1 1/2 in. He will be moved into a 75g soon. He was a gift.) and this Pleco whom I'm unsure of what he is.

So with that said, I bought a "Rubber Lip Pleco" from Petsmart about a month ago. He's a timid Pleco, but he's out most of the time. Which I was told isn't very common for a Rubber Lip. His coloration is nothing like that of a Rubber Lip. I have no idea what he could be. He looks like my Peppered Cory. I just need to make sure he'll fit in a 75g when he's older.

Sorry about quality. My cell phone is awful.

Looks like a common to me. :(

Chain store employees have little training yet are expected to sell fish. Most don't know what they are talking about.

The issue though, is that when I got him he did look like a Rubber Lip. He had the coloration and he had a very wide face. I know Pleco's change colors under multiple conditions, but he randomly just did this one night. Is there possibly something wrong with him? Or maybe he's just a weirdo and likes to be colored that way? haha.

Edit: My apologies for not putting this in the Pleco forum. Going to do that now.

He doesn't have a Common Pleco build. He looks similar to a Rubber Lip/Bulldog. I know that Pleco's can change coloration for many reasons. But he did this one night out of the blue and ever since he's been a lot more active, and I've been seeing him out much more.

Thanks for any help. :)

Kind of hard to tell based on your pictures but he looks like a rubberlip to me.

Mine is also a dark with some light patches coloration.

Try here for some images to compare:

(Mine is similar to 2nd column 3rd row)

Well, I will be the first to admit that pleco ID's are not my strong point! I really hope I'm wrong.

Thank you very much. This helped a lot. :D I was so worried that I was going to have a strange type of Pleco that I knew little to none about. Mine too looks like the 2nd column, 3rd row. With a little more spotting. But I'm glad he's a Rubber Lip. :) He will be able to stay in my 14 gallon for how long I had planned him to. I really appreciate the posts, guys.

And again, sorry for the fail in posting in general!

Sorry about the fail ID! I had trouble seeing the pics and just shouldn't have posted anything, lol. Glad you got the fish you wanted!
