View Full Version : 10 gallon aquarium light help
I'm on the prowl for a low-medium light fixture for my 10 gallon. The only plants in the tank are java ferns. All the fluorescent fixtures I find seem a bit pricey...do I have to stick with a 20" fixture or can I go smaller? The tank has a glass top and the light would have to be mounted onto that.
Is there any cheap DIY solution or will is paying $30-40 the only way? (yes, I realize that's not expensive in terms of this hobby generally, but I am having budget issues with this project)

For my ten gallons I use a desk lamp like this one,

For the bulb I use a CFL 26 watt ( 100 watt equivalent ) in the 6500K range, to get the right amount of light I adjust the height of the light above the tank, currently that's about 18" for me.
Does this light have a base or do you somehow attach it to the tank - picture for me is a bit unclear.

Uses a mount that clamps to an edge on a desk or table or shelf. I drilled holes in my mount and screwed it to a shelf that is on the wall behind my tanks. It can also be mounted on a wall if you drill the mount.

i have a 10 gallon hood and light fixture i've recently converted to using fluorescent bulbs. The tank isn't running, but I've fixed the light fixture so that the reflector is a bit wider to fit a couple fluorescent bults. 14w each. I had to take out the reflectors and bend them out more. You need to find the mini coil fluorescent bulbs at home depot and only put bulbs that your fixture will support.
I have a glass top and want something that can sit on that rather than a light fixture inside a hood.
I looked at the walmart piece, but due to space issues the light really needs to sit horizontally on top. Right now I guess it is a toss up between this:

and this:

Any comments are quality or alternatives? I was originally considering the catalina fixture when I was planning a heavily planted tank, but now that it's just java ferns this fixture seems like overkill.
