Ok so the 40g i was given was in serious need of a re-seal, the bead on the corners was non existent and how it held water is beyond me, now my problem is this.
in the photo's shown is the bottom plate of glass which is loose, the silicone sealing it to the outer pieces has broken away.
am i going to get away with just beading around the edges like a normal repair or am i going to have to completely strip the tank down and re-glue all the glass together then seal the edges? (please tell me i dont have to do this last part!!)
i have re-sealed a lot of tanks but have never done this kind of repair and a little apprehensive to strip it if i don't have too.

looks like you may be able to just reseal it as is.. northernguy will be along soon and let you know for sure.

if its missing silicone in between the glass i don't think you can just reseal the outer seal without replacing the silicone between the glass. i don't know if you can just add to what is already there or if you have to take the whole piece off and start again. i have always heard that new silicone does not stick to old silicone very well. if it were mine i would never trust that tank to hold water for long. when i was resealing my 75g i spoke to a guy who had resealed many tanks and he said the sometimes they hold and sometimes they don't. and sometimes they hold for a little while then out of nowhere they spring a leak.

I have two tanks that are built where the trim seems to hold it all together.
Once I removed all the silicone from the inside the bottom panel was easy to fully remove from the tank. After All the residue was removed I laid a thick bead of silicone on the bottom trim inside the tank.I then layed the bottom peice into the bed of silicone.Smoothed out under the tank and created a seal.Continue onto the inside of the tank and get all the sicone applied before it starts to set.
I only taped the vertical seams in these tanks not the bottom.
New silicone never sticks to old silicone effectively!
Before I added the silicone I took a pic of the tank.Is this the same type tank?

It looks like it is yes. i cant fully pull out the glass it just moves when a bit of pressure is applied, i will just run a bead around it and then seal it with a good dollop of the silicone, Thanks Ray your awesome.thumbs2:

I tried sealing my tank with our removing the bottom panel and I it did start to leak two months after. That is why I suggested removing it and laying it in a good sized bead.
Its up to you.I still do not why it leaked but it did.It really shouldn't matter but most other tanks are held together with a silicone weld and then the trim is applied to protect it,these tanks its the trim that holds it together.
Too many sleepless nights I guess!:hmm3grin2orange:

Sorry Ray i read that post wrong, yeah im going to pull the bottom pane of glass and bead it before putting the glass back down into the silicone, let that cure then re-seal the tank.
Thanks again everyone thumbs2:
