Hi. I bought what I thought was a rubberlip pleco, but as it grows, I'm thinking it must actually be a common. I just believed the label at the LFS. I only have a 50 gallon, so I will eventually have to rehome it.
My question is, would I be able to put in a bristlenose into the tank in the meantime, or do I need to wait until I rehome the common? I don't know that much about plecos, but read sometimes they can be territorial. There's several rock caves, so each could have their own turf, depending on how moody they are.

Would that work?

Not sure about this but unless you have dedicated plans for a far larger tank please return the common pleco. They should get enormous.

That being said I have 2 commons and they are never aggressive however they are in a 220 gallon tank so territory isn't necessarily a problem for them.

I would return it, but I have no receipt, and it has been several months. The fact that it's grown in that time alerted me that it's a common. There's a youth center that has a very large (300g or so, I'm guessing)aquarium, that I'm hoping will take it. If not, I'm not sure what to do, because it won't be happy in a 50g.

Hi. The store should take it back without a receipt but may not give you anything for it, if you don't mind that.

Does anyone know what the chain stores, like Petsmart, would do with a big pleco? I don't mind being out the $3, but I can't imagine that they'd take care of it well or find a good home for it. They were willing to sell me the wrong fish in the first place...

How big is the pleco now? Most likely the store will take him back but you could try sell him on craigslist. If you want him gone quick, put an ad in craigslist for him to be free to good home. I've found that many people are looking for free fish. Some have no experience but others are quite good.

OK. I'm not in such an urban area, but I'll try craigslist. Thanks.

I would do PU only, to make sure the right people get him.

Petco and Petsmart will take in fish sometimes... and they put them up for low prices usually to try and get them adopted.

At least the ones near me do that.

Sorry it took so long. Here's a pic of my pleco. I'm almost positive it's a common. Like I said before, I just trusted what the sign said. Oops.

bump

Can anyone ID this pleco for me? If it's going to not grow too big, I'd like to keep it; if it's a common, then I need to rehome it.

Thanks
