You would be amazed at the number of workers at the post office that don't know you can ship fish. This is useful to have so you can point out the regulation code if they give you any trouble about shipping fish. I keep a printout with me, whenever I go to ship something just in case.

What they require when you ship fish.
* Fish must be held in a securely sealed primary receptacle.
* Primary receptacle must be cushioned with sufficient absorbent material to take up all liquid in case of leakage.
* Primary receptacle and absorbent cushioning material must be sealed within waterproof outer (shipping) packaging.

No idea on international delivery. If shipping fish/plants I think you need to find out what the rules/laws are about importing/exporting them too.

I know at the post office you pay a little more then what you would pay on the net is why I am asking, I just sent a small flat rate box for 4.95 yesterday but bought the postage online.

I just sent out 8 orders of shrimp in the little boxes and they charged me $5.20 each. I just figured the post office raised their price again since you posted. They seem to raise their rates every year, it seems. That was the price at the PO.

I see the medium and large flat rates are also higher, too. 45 Cents more for the large box and 25 cents for the medium.

Post office wants us to feel sorry for them because they are going broke but today I received a medium flat rate box that was $11.65 to ship and a large flat rate box that cost the sender $15.65.

Friends don't let friends buy gift cards! They come riddled with hidden fees and many go unused.

There is a price increase scheduled in january as well. It can sometimes be cheaper to find/make your own box and then plug it into the various cost calculators on all the shipping services websites.

For example, in Washington State, we have very consumer friendly gift card rules. For example, no expiration date and pretty strict limitations on fees.

I guess that shipping floors me. I get a big box from PetSolutions full of food, dechlorinator and whatever, and I pay $12.95 for shipping. I'm beginning to think it's far cheaper to ship just grabbing your own box and let the USPS have their darned priorty boxes.

Priority is not the way to go unless you are sending something heavy.

For example.... when you are mailing Michigan beach stones to Washington. ¬.¬

Generally speaking normal post will get where it needs to go in the same amount of time... and on the same trucks. Its just not guaranteed. Even so... if you live in one of those magical places where you mail always takes an extra day the priority doesn't override that extra PO delay. Because of where I live, I know that its literally impossible to next day mail me anything.

I just checked, their prices haven't gone up again since Jan 1, 2011. The flat rate boxes are so much easier to use since you don't have to buy boxes and you know exactly what to charge for shipping. As an occasional shipper, I am not going to invest in a scale so I can estimate shipping.

It's all in the boxes. I get my plants in the bottom or top box and only pay $8.50. The boxes in the middle are the ones that are far more to ship. Obviously you can't ship fish in the flat boxes.

anything that isn't heavy or live should go Parcel Post I would ship plants Parcel too.

Hobbs, the extra cost was probably for tracking.
Print postage online USPS or Paypal and tracking is free

Flat rate box prices went up at the end of January. I haven't sent anything with flat rate shipping in a long while. Depending on the size and weight of the package, cheaper to ship by priority mail instead.

Where do you get the boxes? My post office must hide them because they only set out the flat rate priority. Those are fine for shipping fish but not needed for plants.

I stopped at a Pack n Ship joint the other day to see if I could buy some small boxes from them. They wanted $26 for 10 small boxes! I about choked. Then I ask her what it would cost to send one of those small boxes to CA. She said $16. hahahahahaha

I get them online off the usps site for free and they ship to your door. The local post office will sometimes have them, sometimes have to ask for them. For larger amounts you have to ask them to get the out from the back. I tend to use the 7x7x6 priority boxes the most, with about half a cup of water they seem to ship for around $6.50-$8, cost varies on weight and distance.

I wouldn't pay for boxes, can always repurpose small cardboard boxes from grocery or other stores.

Thought I would add this, tracking numbers are included in the price when you mail a package now, used to be an additional fee.
