well, the 180 i gave in and bought came without filters, and I am going to build a wet dry to handle bio filteration. will a Rubermaid tub as a sump with a 3 tray drawer dower for floss bioballs, etc, work? im talking about the big tubs and the average size drawer tower. will this be enough? btw, it will be a FW, which is more efficient with a wet/dry than SW. Also, what is a good canister filter to cover mechanical filtration? i haven't needed a filter this large before for a FW. any help or ideas would be great.

Great idea, I used the same design.

Many members here have used large Rubbermaid containers with a drawer set in it for the bio balls. Depending on the flow rate of the pump you will use in your sump, you could use a filter sock and eliminate the need for canister filter all together. I would personally add a canister tho. There’s some good explanation videos on U-tube on how to build and plumb a sump set-up like the one you’re talking about should you like more info to consider.

If you are going to add a canister, I would use either a fluval FX5 or a Rena XP4

good advice.

I will add that using a 50 or 55g aquarium would make an ideal sump. you can easily see water levels, hide your heaters, and gives it a much cleaner look IMO.
for canisters, fx5 or xp4 are most popular and best reviews. I run 2x ac110s, fx5, and 55g wet/dry on my massive bioload and it works great.
