I am going to buy a Anole Lizard today or tomorrow after I rearange some tanks around.

I was just wondering has anyone owned one?

Also at my local fish store they keep there Anole Lizards and Firebelly Toads in the same 10g tank.

Do you think it could work at home if I had a Anoles and a Firebelly Toad in the same 10g tank?

Do you think a 10g would work or would I need a bigger thank?

im guessing you could use the 10g.

We had anoles for several years...they were my daughter's and our first foray into lizards (I have snakes).

We started with a 10g but quickly moved them into a 20...they're a fast lizard and need room to move...a 10g doesn't give them any room (20's not much better)...

I never thought to house them with the toads...but I suppose you could do it provided you had a large enough dry area for them...ours spent a considerable amount of time on the ground...

I am using a bare bottom and a 60watt heat lamp. I also hear they will only eat live Crickets not dead crickets. is that true?

Rue

Yes...not much eats dead food...

But they eat much more than just crickets...get them used to a good mix of crickets (staple), mealworms (once a week) and waxworms (once a week - too fatty to eat more often)...they also eat some fruits and veggies...but it takes some work to prepare those properly...baby food is a good option...but we never did figure out how to portion out the can without it going bad...

We're not good at organizing frozen food...

Also...they're gregarious...don't get just one...of either the lizards or the toads...too lonely for them....

If i decide at a later time to get a toad with the Lizard I will go up to a 20g, but for now I will try the 10g I bought. Also for now I will start with the crickets.

Good luck!

Do keep in mind that they can't 'only' have crickets...you end up with malnutition...

...dust your crickets with calcium powder 2X a week...that will help a little...

The other thing that will help is if you feed your own crickets...and 'gut load' them...feed them prepared cricket powder...calcium water (jellied)...fish flakes...oranges...carrots...etc. That way they'll transfer a lot of that good nutrition onto the anoles...

Be careful too, with what sexes you get...only one male...the rest should be girls...

I plan to have a Orange and a potato in the Cricket tank.

Looking forward to the pic...

Understand. I have a question. How do you open the lid of the tank to add water to it's bowl or feed it with out the Lizard getting out?

This is the setup.

10g tank
Bare Bottom tank
Screen Top
Heat lamp 60 watt bulb
Few Branches from outside
Plate with water

Rue
06-18-2007, 01:52 AM
...very carefully...

...seriously now...we had the type of tank lid that opened in the middle...lizard didn't run out...

The full lids...like I have on my snake's cage are another story...and when she makes the mad escape dash I have to be on my toes to catch her in time...

Not sure how to do it with the anoles other than get the type of lid we used...or gently 'scare' them to hide lower in the tank...

I was just thinking I may go back this week get a 20g and get a second Anole Lizard and a Firebelly toad.

If you have enough water, you could keep 3 firebellied toads. I heard they get lonely as well.

Would a Fish tank hood work? would the light from a 10g tank be enough?

freshwaterfishlover

My store does not keep the Firebelly Toads in 2-3 inches of Water. They just keep them the same way as they keep the Anoles Lizard. There in the same tank with just a large water Bowl.

YAY!!!

The aquarium lid might work...but you want to consider an UVA/UBV bulb for the lizards...

I am just wuried that when I open the Lid the Lizard will run out and I do not want a Lizard running around my house. Till I figure out something I am not buying another Lizard. I will go back to the Fish store Tomorrow and talk with the owner.

Since never owning a Anoles Lizard I do not know more then what I read on the internet. What kind of Plants can I use?

YaYgoldFish

Well if you dont mind touching it you can always grab him and place him somewhere till your setup the tank. ex. those plastic betta bowls.

Rue

...as far as plants go, any of the usual terrarium-type plants will do...

im busy and cant read the other posts, but the firebelly toad excretes a poison that harms other animals. only firebelly toads and firebelly newts are okay in their own poison

Rue
06-18-2007, 04:22 AM
...I'd have to double check, but isn't their toxin food-related? If they're eating a bland cricket-based diet, are they still a touch toxic?

cocoa_pleco
06-18-2007, 04:24 AM
i read that even if you 100% feed crickets (i do) they still are poisonous. thats why its warned that if you handle the toads you wash your hands after. I could be wrong.

When you put a uva/uvb light over glass, it filters out 93% or the light. But most UVB lights are only 7%, so i dont know.

Rue
06-18-2007, 05:00 AM
...well, it would be better with just the mesh or wire lid like we have...so not going through glass...

I think the jury is still out on the supposed benefits...but I figure it can't hurt and if it does help it's worth it...

The lights give the reptiles calcium they need for good bone structure. My neighbor has 50+ bearded dragons, and he took in two that didnt have the proper lighting, and their spines were all deformed.

Rue
06-18-2007, 05:01 PM
...not quite...

Lizards can't metabolize dietary calcium without activated vitamin D (and phosphorus)...and vitamin D is activated by UV rays...

If lizards don't get UV rays to metabolize dietary calcium they use up the calcium in their bones to meet their physiological needs and get Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)...

This is an aquarium forum but I just so happen to know more about reptiles than I do fish for now ahaha.
Anyways, anoles can be started in 10g but they obviously would be more comfortable in larger.
Personally I don't think it would be that good of an idea to house the toads and lizards together because the toads need a real lot of humidity and not as much light. Anoles need a heat lamp and just a really dry tank that is fairly open with some hiding places to cool down.
Also, as far as substrate, anoles do well with really fine sandy substrate like calcium sand or whatever you would use. Whereas toads like the moist multchy type stuff you have to mist often to keep it damp.

I know more about the lizards than I do the firebelly toads but just from what I know in general about toads I would say they wouldn't go well in a Anole tank.

If you have any more questions you can PM me and a lot of information is easily found on the net if you look around.

...if you keep the anoles too dry they won't shed properly...

I spray the Lizard 3 times a day. I put 2 live Crickets in it's tank and it will not eat it. The Crickets have been in the tank a couple hours. Also soon I am going to realy setup the tank with sticks, plants and more. I now wish I started with a 20g.

I am thinkig I will use a 20g for 2 Anoles and the 10g for a Firebelly Toad. I was just wondering how do you use a Filter or heater in a tank with just 2-3 inches of Water?

I don't think you do. Do you? Maybe I'm wrong.

freshwaterfishlover

Every website I have found about Firebelly Toads says use a filter.

gm72
06-19-2007, 02:01 AM
Hmm, not sure how you'd make that work with so little water? Maybe just use extensions to make it work?

cocoa_pleco
06-19-2007, 02:03 AM
you dont. heaters and filters cannot be safely used in a 10g. firebelly toads are fine in dirty water. just clean their water every 2 weeks and they are fine in room temp. However, if you really want a filter, which isnt necessary, you can buy a submersible fluval and turn it sideways laying down

freshwaterfishlover
06-19-2007, 02:12 AM
Coca for FireBellys you do not need any type of heat lamp? You just use Aquarium hood light or no light at all?

I most likely will buy a Firebelly Toad this weekend for my 10g. I also will buy a 20g make a real good looking setup and put 2 Anoles in the 20g.

cocoa_pleco
06-19-2007, 02:29 AM
i have NOTHING special for them. Its just a 20g long with a crappy lid, enough water for them to be able to run, driftwood, and a few rocks. they do fine

For my turtle tank I have a small filter and it can filter in up to 2 inches of water. It's like a mini in tank filter. It sucks though I need to get a bigger one.
