while i have seen people use sponge filters even on larger tanks i personally would reccomend a power filter of some kind. A hang over the back filter or a canister would be better in my opinion.

There's no way to tell for sure but I'd guess it would do 25-30G tank. This type of filter is powered by an air pump but you can use power heads with sponge filters of this type to have a very effective in tank mechanical and biological filter. It might be a bit difficult to connect it to a powerhead though. If you could list the maker or model number that would help a great deal in answering your question.

What type of tank is this? What are your livestock?
That particular unit won't be enough for the 50 gallon. That unit will require an air pump. Basically, it'll use air pressure to filter the water and as the water passes through the columns, it'll get filtered by the sponge and the sponge will act as a bio media as well. However, this should only be considered a secondary unit of filtration and is usually used in fry tanks.
