Anyone know which Geo this little guy is? My LFS only knows thats its a Geophagus, they didn't know which one. Im wondering what size he will ultimately be, and how long it will take for him to grow up. He's about 1 1/2" to 2" right now. Sorry the pics aren't up to my usual standards, but the tank is super tannic-ey and the moment from a new piece of driftwood. Thanks!

Looks like a Satanoperca jurupari. You notice the absence of cheek spangling which would indicate it is a true jurupari instead of the typical S.leucosticta commonly sold as Jurupari. It is hard to tell how large the fish is from the photos but S.leucosticta dont start developing the spangling until around 3-4" so it is also possible it is this fish as they are nearly identicle when small. The fish will grow to around 10" and they are quite peaceful and do best in groups of their own kind.

i also vote jurupari, though at the size of that fish it could be leucosticta. I reccomend finding him some friends. How big is your tank?

Its a 50g, thats why I was asking, he may eventually outgrow the tank. But thats gonna tank a long time, im not to worried for now. Im friends with my lfs owner and he's always happy to buy fish from me.

And believe me, I tried to give him friends, and he was having NONE of it. He has decided that he is the ONLY geophagus thats allowed anywhere near his sand. I had to take the other I got back, he almost killed one. He seems very happy by himself; plus he, my keyhole, and my gbr have formed a little group and usually hang out together.

hmm, how many new geos did you add? One time i tried to add one new one to mine and they almost killed eachother. I added 4 newbies and they threw a fit for a few minutes but chilled out quick.

I think your probably right, I only tried to add one. But at 50g my tank is already a little overstocked as it is, but like I said he's a happy fish.
