View Full Version : When do Common Plecos stop growing?

After i moved my 14 in Common Pleco "Nemo" to my 125 gallon I wonder if he will grow more? He is 1 1/2 years old. At what age are they full grown? I saw bigger ones at my LFS.

technically fish never stop growing, it's just that the growth rate slows down as they get older. The older and healthier the fish, the bigger it will be. I think commons can hit two feet long.

Yeah, saw some big ones before at the LFS with big heads and wider, too. It is so much fun to watch him now stretching his body out and swim more freely in the 125 gallon. I don't think he would grow bigger in the 55 gallon.

I`m glad you can keep him and move him to a bigger tank! Excellent!

In the moment I purchase a fish it is a responsibility for life, just like I feel about my cats and dogs, too.

It's tough to have the right tank for these fish longterm. IMO they shouldn't be sold but that's for a different thread. I'm glad that you are trying to do right by your fish.

Is that a picture of your Pleco? How long is that?

It's not me. I'm guessing the fish was about 24" long. They all have this potential. Black adonis plecos (often sold as "algae eater") get even larger I believe.

I recently did a similar move of my own. If your pleco was a rescue/may be stunted, you will stop noticing growth closer to 14" or so.

Actually, there are two species of pleco sold as commons. One reaches about a foot, one two feet plus. Details and how to tell the difference between the two sold as commons is in my Loricariad Primer (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/showthread.php?t=26073) on the forum.

There are plecos and even oscars in many small ponds/lakes in georgia. Heard from another club member of someone pulling a pleco around 20" from a pond in a local park.

I have saw them up to 2ft before. but tank size/pond size/diet etc will make the pleco vary in size (example to small of a tank will stunt his growth)

I was under the impression that they never stop growing. We have a furniture shop around here that has a ~2500 gallon indoor koi pond as a decorative element when you walk in the door. There's a pleco in the pond that's easily 3 feet or longer. It's almost scary how big this fish is. It dwarfs most of the koi in the pond.

I think he grew a little more, since he is in the 125 gallon. He is 15 in now.
