View Full Version : Thoughts on the sub-forums

I love this place. While I have read that there are more active aquarium forums on the web, I never bother to look for them. The people and advice here are great. I've never had an issue with any of the moderation of the forums either Everyone really does a great job and there is very little I dislike about this place. Great job, everyone. From the top down.

The one thing that I've never seen work that well is the abundance of subforums though. A thread being sent away from the general forum seems to basically be a death sentence. If it is active on the general forum than it seems to still keep minor, much lessened activity levels on the subsection that it is moved to, and other slower threads are instantly killed by the move.

The theory behind all the subforums is sound. An organization of conversation, topic, and thought definitely is a good idea. It just doesn't seem to work to me. People just don't actively browse most of the forums. Those who use the "New Posts" feature will see activity in the sub forums, but I suspect only really experienced posters use that if they do at all as it isn't a common forum feature.

It seems to me that the main effect of moving a thread inevitably ends up being a sharp decrease in responses if not a flat out death of the thread. We do not seem to me to have the userbase and activity level that the efficient use of the subforums would require. I mean, just browse the forum categories. On any given time the general forums may have 20-25 people viewing, if not more. The sub forums usually have 0-2 people viewing them. The odds of someone finding the responses they are looking for are significantly higher on the general board, but they are often forced to move to an inactive forum without the consistent userbase to actively help them.

Thanks for reading and I am curious to read responses. Obviously the system isn't broken as people routinely get great help here, but it just seems overly complex to me. Simpler is always better on website layouts.

Of course there is always the serious possibility that I am crazy and no one else thinks this way.

You also have to realize that it's summer and the forum is slower than normal, IMO. People are taking vacations, enjoying the outdoors, and psoting on the forum less.

I think you will see a big difference in a month or two

I've never been dissapointed by this forum =] even in the subforums, the regular posters check them out once in a while.

All new threads show up in the sub-forums just as easily as in the General forum and I think get better response. All the sub-forums do is keep things organized. It makes no sense to me that there would be 100 threads about cycling in the General Forum and the cycling thread was sitting empty?

Think of it as trying to keep History/Math/Geography/ and all your school papers all jammed into one big folder and you would not be able to find anything. If you answered a question yesterday about someones angelfish and wanted to read their answers today, you should be able to just go into "angelfish" and find it easily, not search thru 100's of posts.

I agree their are too many sub-forums, tho.

the experienced people will see your posts no matter where they are posted.. I always see posts from all subforums.

I use the newpost buttom 24/7. I dont even bother to check the main page with all the forums on it. I do see your point though, and think it is valid to bring it up.

I'm a new post person as well, I press the new post button and see what people are saying pretty much when I'm not working, sleeping, or busy. So I see people posting in the sub forums but I have a very limited knowledge base and the little knowledge I have is on the basics. But I do get what your saying.

I always just use the new post button, and I tend to at least glance at each thread. I do agree that threads in the general section receive more attention, but I think the really experienced people (which are the people you really want help from anyhow) will find your thread even if it's in a seldom-used subforum.

I have always used the new posts button since day one. I only ever go to the other areas when I am looking for something specific that may be old.

I tend to go to the sub-forums first, especially the cichlid ones. It's easier to find posts I want to respond to, and if time is limited, I'm going to stick to the areas I like best. I have to agree with what Crispy said, not to mention, you're more likely to get a response from someone who has more experience in that area when you post in a sub-forum rather than in the catch-all general forum.

I agree that there are too many sub-forums. An example would be the invertebrates forum. There is no need to have the sub-forums within it because most people just use the main one.

I like it the way it is. Very organized, and as already mentioned, if you hit the "new posts" button, you see them all anyway.

I use the new posts button as well... probably a lot more than I should during a day cuz I am that bored at work. I do at times go and browse the sub forums and agree there may be a bit too many. However I do like the organization it gives.

I actually like the subforums, because that way I go right away to the ones I am interested in , I think it is more organized that way.

A reason why the questions in the (or atleast some) sub forums get less response is that there are more narrow and often more advance. It would be the same if they were posted in the general forum. A post about an advanced topic will natural get less answers than an easy question about cycling.

Another note is that often one answer will work for such questions. Exe if someone asks "will my jag attack my oscar" in SA cichlids,a simple yes or no will pretty much work. Jcardona, if you've got more than one question, perhaps it belongs in a more general forum ;)

Vary valid!

Seeing as there are never hundreds of new posts in the general forum. I don't see it as necessary to move anything out of it for say 3-4 days?
