It's open on the top wich allows fishes like ropefish to jump. Is there something i can build to avoid a rope fish to jump off the tank?

you would have to build a canopy to house the light which would enclose the top.

I would think that the only way you could prevent fish from jumping out is to close the top, either by canopy or glass cover, which of course would defeat the purpose of an open tank. You could also put a screen on top of it which would still give you somewhat of an open tank or you could extend the sides of the tank so it would be too high for the fish to jump out.

This is where the open concept does not work when you have fish that jump. I've considered the light on legs for my angel tank as they are not big jumpers but it would never work for other fish that are.

The open concept is appealing to me in that the glass on top is not always needing cleaning and coated with lime scale but then there are other concerns such as evaporation and pollutants in the home to worry more about .....like cigarette smoke, air sprays, etc.

How about a thin piece of plexaglass?

You can use eggcrate. The real name is lighting diffuser and you can buy this at any home improvement store in the lighting section. This is commonly used with kitchen fluorescent lighting. It comes in long sheets that can be cut to size. I use a wire cutter to cut it to the size I need. It also comes in different sized "grids" so you can pick one that would work best with your ropefish. It allows air and light to pass through but will keep most fish from jumping out. Just so you know, extremely large fish may be able to push this aside and very small fish may still be able to leap through the grids. Keep the level of your water a bit lower too and that will help to discourage any escapes.

Get Plenty of floating plants. Not only will the fish feel mre secure and be less likely to jump out, they look nice.

Like someone else stated the best way I think would be to get glass or plexi-glass that fits into the inside edge of the black trim of your aqaurium and put it there. However, just make sure your measurements are exact. You don't want it to short and you don't want to hang it over the edges, this would defeat the purpose. I am assuming you just don't want a top to be visible?

I side with Ed, swimming plants. If the water cfontains enough phosphate and nitrate, they will grow heartily.

I have an open tank covered with swimming plants, and up to now, none of my fish comitted suicide.

They tried it, when my tank was covered with glas, which is a lousy solution, cause the glass will soon be blind with those "calciferous (????) spots". This not only looks messy but also keeps the light away from the plants in the tank.

I've seen alot of tanks that i've liked, and this by far is the best tank ever. Sorry in advance for copying your setup =) i'm gonna get started now, Did the plants grow outside of the tank like that or did you set it up that way.

Drape some netting over the top. Mosquito netting, fruit tree netting, fishing netting - whatever you feel will stop 'em from going over the edge and onto the floor.
