I'am getting a 40 gallon chiclid aquarium, and I am going to put at least on firemouth and convict. So, any other similar chiclid species i could add?:help: :fish: :goldfish: ?:fish2:?

Moving this to the Central American Cichlids forum.
Convicts can be vicious and I would not keep them with the more meek Firemouth.

A 40 is the minimum recommended size tank for either a pair of convicts or firemouths. Also, I would do either or, since convicts can get pretty aggressive.

A pair of firemouths, a pleco and a school of some sort of larger tetra would be nice.

Convict's with Firemouths not a great option as aeon said "either/or", during spawning if you are unlucky enough to have a breeding pair they will kill everything in the tank and i really mean that, i had to pull all of my fish out of an 80 as the parents would actually chase the fish through the whole tank and were talking 4 feet of length and if i hadn't intervened would have most certainly killed my 11" pleco and he is armoured.
the firemouths although not as nasty would do the same as both species are excellent parents.
i personally would go with a pair of firemouths in a tank with fish that are not edible and agile swimmers so as coolingeffect said some larger tetra or danios of some sort.
Convicts are awesome little fish but i will honestly tell you to stay away from them.

Ok then i might just get 2 cons or two firem's. and ill get a pleco. but, if i get one firemouth what else could i get, preferably chiclids.

one firemouth with an acara or a single rainbow cichlid or something would likely work out well. I actually love firemouths and i would really suggest a pair. If you kept them without getting to see the spawning behavior youd be missing out. They like to dig so make sure the substrate isnt too sharp. Dont want to hurt them.

you know, ive never actually seen one but some fish stores apparently carry them. You might do ok with a single con but keep in mind that some cons even when not spawning are sadistic little guys.

Plecos can't go in 40 gallons with cichlids unless you're buying a rarer variety which are usually 100$+
Blue Acara, Aquedins Pulcher, is a common fish to my knowledge. Ask around LFSs or PetSmart and you should find something. You could only really do one if you've also got convicts/firemouths in there. 8" fish, relatively peaceful. Not unlike severums. IMO this would be nice;;;
Firemouth pair
Blue Acara
Then a shoal of 4" shoalers like Giant Danios that won't get eaten.

Bristlenoses, clown plecs, and rubberlips are all small types of plecos and do not go for anywhere near $100.

A convict cichlid would tear clowns and rubberlips apart. Bristlenose might work, I've never seen them for sale here though so I can't offer that good an opinion.

Bristlenose are commonly put in African cichlid tanks. I have BNs in with a CA/SA cichlid community tank as well as in my African cichlid tank. They're tough little plecos.

Ah, I see. My friend had one with angels once. It had a dissapointing lack of bristles. If the other fish won't kill it though I don't see a problem with it.
