View Full Version : An Aquarium Experiment
Someone was going to flush a bunch of livebearer fry...so I brought some home...
Of course, no where to put them...so I put them in the little 2.5g snail holding tank I recently bought to house snails for the pufferfish.
There's a mix of some 12-15 guppies, platies, mollies and swords...
Brought them home Wednesday...so far they're all alive. I moved the tank up stairs where it's warmer...and I'll look to see if I can find my old sponge filter.
So, I'm going to try and rear them in the little tank. If they all survive...I'll have to give some away...I can house a few in the 25g community, but not all of them...if I do a huge waterchange every other day, it might keep parameters good...I can test and see...
Sounds like a lot of fun! Keep us posted!
All the babies are growing!
All I'm doing is feeding them regular food...just making sure it's in small enough bits...and doing water changes...that's it!

LOL Quite a group you have going for ya. Nice of you to rescue these little guys. I hope the store gave them to you for being so nice.
...it does look like they're eyeing the bread!
Oh yes! They were definately free! The tank is mainly to hold snails for the puffers...but I thought I'd see how it goes for the fry...
Not sure what to do if they all make it...I can keep a couple of platies or mollies...but I don't have room for all of them...
...and NO! Not another tank...lol...a wise person knows when enough is enough (or so I tell myself)...

haha sounds right
Rue, MTS! MTS! MTS! Come on, you KNOW you'll end up getting another tank!
Well, let's see now...
I have 4 tanks up and running...
...the SW tank almost up and running...
...and if you count the fry tank as a tank...
That makes it 6...lol...
I also have 1 snake, 4 dogs, 2 house cats and 15 pet birds (parrots and finches - but 7 if those are my daughter's)...I need to draw a really really WIDE line...:c4:
You have a menagerie like we do here.
9 tanks
3 dogs
5 cats
1 hampster
40 or so houseplants
There is no line to draw. MTS! MTS!
Yup! I also forgot to mention the 13 horses and numerous barn cats...:c3:
(Several horses are retired or permanently injured or just pets...we only have 3 that are currently well-broke...and 2-3 that could be soon, with further training)...

I almost bought that little tank the other day. Then i thought to my self. Do i really need it? So i didnt get iit.
I only have 3 tanks and a dog.
But my neighhbor has 32 snakes, and a 4 foot long lizard. Eats 12 mice every 5 days.
...you have great self-control!
Imagine the neighbour's pet food bill! Unless he's raising his own mice...it's gonna be HUGE!:jaws:

He works for a pet store, so get gets 100 mice for 10 bucks.
He has some pretty sweet lizards, and he is supposed to be getting a blackthroated monitor today as well.
Anyway, how are the fry doiing?
Wow, cool stuff. Rue, 13 horses! Wow. Drum, your neighbor's collection sounds cool too.

....when do you people all eat, sleep etc.?!!!!:laugh1blue:
I'd be scared to have so many animals - so many mouths to feed, houses to clean etc.
Good on you all, though!
Rather these are being properly cared for than shoved 100 into a tiny shop tank.
We have everything streamlined...and it's not just me of course...there are 5 of us and we all pitch in to do chores...

LOL...yes...that's why I had kids...
Seriously...I have planned things out...so when the kids are all gone I won't have any critters that I can't look after all by myself...
...we're already down 4 horses...used to have 17...
Once my senior dogs have gone...I will only have the one big one and the one little one...less work...
And my daughter's birds are hers...so I won't be looking after them...

Got any fish eaters? Those little fish make good food. I feed guppies to my oscar.
I could feed them to my community tank...but the point of the experiment is to see if they would thrive in a small tank with no maintenance but water changes...

Thats what i do. When i get too many fry in the livebearer tank, i put them iin with bruce (my severum) in the colliseum (my 55). They always lose. :28:
Experiment concluded.
They all did very well for the first few weeks. Then they slowly started disappearing one by one...no bodies were ever found.
Finally hubby insisted that the remaining 3 were big enough to put in the community tank. I insisted they weren't...he insisted LOUDER that they were...
...so I caved and put them in the tank (figured they'd be abducted by the fry aliens any second anyway)...
...next morning? Not a trace...
Conclusion:
Use sponge filter and heater in all fry tanks. Do not add snails. Do not listen to hubby.

Sounds pretty conclusive.
Hows the reef doing? Getting ready to start mine in a couple of days!
...just posted an update in the SW forum...
Make sure you post a dedicated thread too...I'll be watching with interest...er, and butting in a lot too! :28:
I suspect my golden dwarf cichlid went crazy yesterday, killing two of my favorite fish.
...maybe the Fry Aliens are expanding their forces and now using Cichlid mind control...
I guess they haven't mastered the mind control becuase an adult fish was killed. Moved the cichlid.

Omg there are so many of them. And it was a nice thing you did to those poor little fishies. Most of the fry will survive, ever since my molly's gave birth, none of the babies died. Maybe when they get bigger you can sell them or exchange them for something?
