I saw a tank of gold tetras mislabelled as glowlights in the shop and I want them. They're dazzling gold. I want to swap my 2 rosy barbs and get 4 of them... but I know that would make my tank borderline crowded.
The temptation. You have no idea!

Then can you imagine if their was 20 or 30 of them in a tank? That's the way tetra's are cool. Getting 4 is not even a school so you did good to pass them by.

I'm going to exchange some fish to get 5 gold tetra during the week. It's like seeing flying bars of gold darting around. I've never seen anything like them. They glow under the lights.
Must have them...
They're barely thumbnail size and won't grow beyond 4cm. If these 5 or 6 don't get sucked against the filter -- like those damn cardinals last year -- I could increase the numbers. I removed 3 marginally healthy plants for extra space. Increased oxygen levels.
I so need to upsize my tank now, it's just so pricey. I'm carefully choosing the next. Something along 180L I think.

Never heard of any fish getting sucked into the filter unless the were already dead. I've had even the smallest of fish wiggly out of the vac hose.
I have glowlights and gold tetra. The golds are probably the fastest fish I have right now. They are a bear to catch.

That's reassuring to know. I think my cardinals were weak. I'll try 5 and see how it goes.

Bought the 5 and exchanged the fish. They weren't mislabelled; they were glowlight tetras. I thought they were gold tetras because they were so golden bright... today they look less goldish...
[whiney voice] Wanted Gold Tetras!
They're so tiny. I don't think 5 was enough. I may have to increase the number. I'll wait a week, see how they acclimatised.
The way the angel looks at them makes me nervous...

The glowlights are doing well. Think I might add another and make an even 6. They're so tiny...

It's better that you didn't go with gold tetras. I've had them before and while beautiful, you don't seen them much. I had a school of 10 in a 20g long tank with only a couple of endlers and peacock gudgeons ( both peaceful fish) and all they did was hide in the back behind the plants. The tank was really well planted and had several hiding places. They just never seemed to get accustomed to the tank even though it never changed.

I have 8 glowlights. Thought they'd feel safer in schools. One died today, and when I check the parameters I had high ammonia.
I probably have too much fish now. But that's ok because I've worked out what tank I want and getting a bigger one.
Wolf, do you have any pics of the gold tetras by any chance? The ones I've seen look ordinary greyish. Did refelcted light just make them glitter gold or do they really have a gold body?

I have glowlights and golds and really not too keen on the golds. They're all one color and rather bland in a planted tank. I like the bright red strip of the glowlights. Easy to see and find. Problem with these tiny fish is it takes a whole lot of them to make a nice display so you're talking about $100-120 for fish for a 29 gallon.

I have a method if I can't afford right away a big group I get 6 and double it a few weeks later. It is better to get the same amount, so they don't bully the poor lonesome one you want to add.
