I picked up this little (2-2.5") guy at the LFS today. He was the only fish in the tank and wasn't marked, but the guy who runs the fish dept told me it was the last Altifrons Tocantins they had and he got moved to the other tank so he wouldn't get mixed up with the other Geo's they had. Colors may be a little off since I just put him in the tank.
Any ideas if that is what it really is?

cant say for sure as they all kinda look alike when they are small, but i will say that its a good looking little fish. Feed him lots though, he looks a little skinny. Mine are all fat little guys and seem to be starting to do a bit of growing.

I just remembered he called it a Tapajos 2, I went in looking for Altifrons Totcantins or Acarichthys Heckelii

That's a tapajos if I've ever seen one.

That makes me feel alot better, just have to get him int shape now along with my Blue Acara that stopped eating pellets last week. The Geo was in the snail tank with water so cloudy you could hardly see him, I dont think there was a heater in the tank either. They gave him to me for $10, so I think I did OK.

Mine cost me 26$ :(
They eat pellets, need good water conditions to adapt.

The link dosn't work. If he gets too agressive for my Severums and Blood Parrots I can take him back to the LFS, they have a huge display tank.

They only get 10", your other cichlids will be fine. I've only had problems with them mixing with angels and other delicates. The do occasionally "kiss" fight, but they won't win against a sev or BP.

It was been flairing back and forth with my Blue Acara for a few min, but they have settled back down. I see you have yours with blue acaras, any issues? Any pics of yours, geo's or acaras?

They keep my acara in his corner LOL. No real aggesion, in smaller tanks he might dominate, but little actual aggression. If the acara can be with the BP, it can be with the tapajos.

that is definately not a tapajos red head? Are there more then one with the designation tapajos? I have 4 red heads and they look nothing like that fish.

I said they were tapajos orange head if I recall correctly. And the care for pretty much any tapajos is the same as for a jurupari.

redhead and orangehead are the same thing from what ive been told. I just did a little looking and tapajos II is a orange striped variant. And for the record i dont know how much different the tapajos II is but my red heads and surinamensis are not agressive at all.

That would be because Surinamensis and RedHeads are the most placid earth-eaters. With that body structure, it's a tapajos geo, which means the care is the same. It's like nitpicking over the care of various tetras.

i agree that the care would be the same, but the op asked for positive id. Im not an expert on the geos as this is my first attempt at keeping them, but that is definately not a red/orange head unless i was lied to when i got mine.

The Geo has been lip locking with my Blue Acara so I returned him to the LFS today. The other fish guy was working today and said it was a brasiliensis. I picked up a pair of Geo Surinamensis that were swimming together in a tank, possibly male/female, but I am not sure about that. They are ~3.5" and look great already.

they look identical to my surninamensis to be honest. Why did you switch to gravel? The geos would have been much much happier with sand.

My wife hadn't liked the sand for quite a while, I had been planning the switch for a long time before the geos came along.
