I have decided that once my cycle finally completes (come on and hurry up!! stuck with sky high nitrites and nitrates at the moment) that I am going to get a group of glowlight tetra, and some shrimp.
Does anyone here have shrimp? which ones are easiest to keep? I have heard that ghost can be pretty fragile. Are shrimp OK to go with the glowlights? and how many should I look to get for a 10G (probably going to have 9 glowlights)...........
Now just to wait some more........... getting impatient though!!

In a 10 gallon, you can have anywhre from 100-130 cherry shrimp, assuming its shrimp only. You could get away with 10 though.

I have Red Cherry Shrimp (RCS) and have been thoroughly enjoying them.
see attachment
I don't think that your glow light tetras will provide much of threat to any adult shrimp, but if you want them to breed then you may be out of luck as they will eat the baby shrimp.
The biggest problem with shrimp is that they are very susceptible to high nitrates and you want to ideally keep your nitrates below 10 at all times.
how many shrimp you get is going to depend on where you get them and what type. You could easily have 20 to 60 RCS in your ten gallon, but I would not purchase them in stores. I would buy them on the swap and shop at [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]. This is where i bought mine and they sell here for about a dollar a piece plus 5 dollars shipping. So 25 bucks here will get you 20 to 25 shrimp(most people throw in extra in case some die in transit) , but if you go to a retailer you will be paying 4 to 6 bucks a shrimp and 25 dollars would only get you 6 to 7 shrimp.
keep in mind that if you do buy shrimp. You are going to want to pick up some mosses as the shrimp love it and the babies and juvies can hide in it.

Thanks for the quick replies......... I am not too bothered about the glowlights eating the baby shrimp, as I don't plan to breed them. So it will be some nice fresh food for the tetras :)
Do I need live plants for the shrimp? I only have some fake plants and had not intended to get any live plants (at least not for the foreseeable future) while I get used to keeping animals alive....... I don't think I want 60 shrimp in the tank (would be cool though) but am happy to know that 10-15 of them would fit nicely in there.
Thanks also for the link hungryhound.

I don't know that live plants are a must, but they do nor hurt with shrimp. Most mosses are low light and will grow under any conditions so if you get shrimp trying to add a little might be worth it, but not needed.
As a note on that link. To view the swap and shop you must register with the site. It is definitely worth it.

If you can lay your hands on Mossballs, get them. Your future shrimps will love those thingies.
Its always funny to watch them sitting on those balls and search for food.
