The score is now Snails 15 versus Hobbs 0.
On July 2, I tore out every plant from my 55 and soaked my plants all night in alum to kill the snails. I put my fish in buckets and poured bleach in the tank to kill the hundreds of snails then put all the substrate thru a strainer to capture the dead snails......plus picked out others for a solid week. Of course I did nothing with my filters because I did not want to kill my bacteria.
I now have snails again that obviously had to come from the filter. So far not many but I also know they constantly lay eggs so once again, the game of hunt down and massacre continues.
I feed only a small amount in the morning and again in the evening and my fish gobble it up in a minute so hopefully it will not get out-of-hand again.

Assassin snails will take care of that problem.

What kind of snails are they?

Pond varmits.
I thought of Assassin's, Lab, but thought they would only eat the tiny snails. Still better than nothing.
I have pond snails hobbs and assassins take out the adults.

Assassins will take out everything. They've done a great job on my mts and ramshorns in the 5g, so much so that I've added snails to the 2.5g so I can grow more snails for the assassins to eat. They've also reproduced a bit, not sure how many but I've seen at least 4 baby assassins. They're really cool to have.
I have a snail issue too...just vacuumed out about 2 million of them when I did my water change.
They don't bother me too much - so far the tank is still healthy...

Oh goody-goody-goody! I now will buy some for sure! How many in a 55 gallon you think or do they need to be only one to a tank? I will have to get some for my sons tank, too.

I have 3 + babies in my 5g. They are not aggressive with each other, I wouldn't put them with nerites or briggs though, since they'll eat those too.

Live and let live, snails are fun little things.

I'm pretty laid back with the whole natural approach thing, but I had a snail explosion in my 38 (yeah, it was a feeding issue, my fault), and it was too much even for me! I put a handful of assassins in there and the problem was gone in less than 2 months. No chemicals, no bacteria loss, no tearing up the plants, it was utterly painless - for me anyway!

I find them interesting to watch. I've got pond, mts, ramshorns, and now HUGE Japanese Pond snails. They keep my algae in check, clean up the bottom, aerate the substrate and make, I think, interesting additions to my tanks.

Hobbs, I would not put over 6 of iin there, but you will like the AS a lot.

If you only have a few small snails one assassin would be enough.
Yeah, but if you go multiple ones you could breed them and move them around to different tanks. Just an option.

I like redclaw shrimp. They kill pond snails but not MTS. I love MTS.

I just did a search and we can't get assassin snail in Australia. Not sure why! They'd be handy for the snail outbreak in my daughters tank.

Probably because the jack rabbits and cane toads have had such a widespread negative impact on the ecosystem. Personally I think the import restrictions are a bit extreme, but they undoubtedly figure better safe than sorry (again.)

What does the AS eat in the event there are not enough snails for him or do you try to make sure he has snails? Trying to have snails would be a new adventure for me. lol

It takes the assassine eggs months to hatch. Painfully slow!
