ok, I am putting together my 30 gal now and trying to find a place for it. It is 12.5 inches wide. I have a 11.5 inch shelf type thing that runs across the whole wall in my basement it is like built into the wall. It is more than enough to support the tank weight wise but I was wondering if the front of the tank overhangs an inch over the side is that bad?

after a while it may cause stress, but short term it may be okay

after a year or two the tank MAY crack at the end due to stress, but it may work out.
EDIT- Ohhhhhhhh, were talking about width, not length.
That way it should be okay i think

ya the whole front of the tank overhangs about 1.5 inches

or what if i took a piece of plywood and put it under it so it went over the overhang and the tank would sit on that

Remember you also need to leave space for filters at the back. I would not recommend having any overhang The four edges of the tank need to be supported. The plywood idea might work, I'm not sure. You could probably put some legs on the plywood overhang just to be sure.

Make sure the shelf is sturdy enough. A 30G tank could weigh up to 300 pounds. Ask two adults to sit on the shelf and make sure it doesn't bend, bow or break... then it might be safe for your tank.
Something you could do to make it safer is run chains up to the ceiling rafters with eye-bolts in the front of the shelf and rafters to make sure it is supported properly.

All sides of the frame must sit on support. You'll talking some serious weight here along with more weight added to it with gravel. I would not even use the shelf!
