View Full Version : Pretty sure this tank is a ticking timebomb....

Alright. If you've read my aquarium journal, you'll know that I really don't have much say in what fish get put in my SA cichlid aquarium. I'm fine with it because I like them all either way.

But today I was sitting there looking at the tank, and I realized that one day this tank might blow up into a firestorm. All the fish are perfectly peaceful right now and get along famously, but I'm 99% certain when they reach maturity they'll a) be too big for the tank b) want to kill each other.

I'm pretty sure this is going to happen. Does anyone else have an idea as to what could go wrong first? I'm hoping to finally shove it into my boyfriend's thick head that one day we'll wake up and half the fish will be dead.

Stocking:

1 female Jack Dempsey, about 6 inches
1 female salvini, 5 inches
4 severum, 2 green, 1 gold, 1 rotkeil (going to rehome one of the greens). Rotkeil is 6 inches, others are 4
6 geophagus, who were sold as pindare, but I'm unsure about their true species. I'll make a thread with that later. Most are 4 inches, one is much smaller
2 Biotodoma wavrini, 3 inches
6 clown loaches, 4 inches

The tank is a standard 125gal. Which fish should I ix-nay? I've really become attached to the geos and the wavrini and the rotkeil severum. I could live without the rest, though.

I do realize that the clowns will someday outgrow this tank, but for now we've maxed out on the tank size we can have in our apartment. We're hoping to get our own house in a few years and get a really, really large tank. It's my understanding that the clowns will take a long time to reach their full adult size.

Oh also, he wants to put a green terror in. I'm about ready to slap him!

Actually the stock isnt bad, the fact your JD and Salvini are female help alot as females are less aggressive. Plus your two toughest fish are adult...so they probably wont get any more territorial than they are now. Your Sevs are also into their "teenage" and the fact your planning to rehome one will also help. I would say overall your tank will work out just fine because your fish are for the most part mildly aggressive, and your two more aggressive fish are female. The fact the tank is a 6ft also makes an impact as it lets the fish sprawl out. This mix probably wouldnt work in a 4ft tank...but its working here...I see no reason why it wont continue to work.

GTs are iffy with geos...fine with your other fish, not something I would recomend even tho I keep a female GT with my geos. Its honestly a 50/50 shot with even a female.

Hm that's really good to know, thanks a lot! I was actually most worried about the JD and salvini, but they're definitely females. I had to convince the bf to take out one of the sevys, but he realized that taking one out would be better for them overall.

I'm glad the stocking is OK, because the JD and salvini are quite beautiful.

I'm going to try to snap some photos of the geos now, hopefully you'll be able to help me ID them! Thanks so much.

Of all those fish, which do you like the best? I would so love to have a couple rotkeil or the red severum.

Agree with Jenn, that stocking is not bad at all. My 75g currently has 2 nics, 2 EBJDs, a sev, a sal, an acara, rosy barbs, BNs, and pictus. Now most of the cichlids are still juvies and I'm sure I'll do some rearranging in the future, but if you get the right mix of cichlids you can do a cichlid community of sorts if you have the experience to deal with the many possible problems that can arise.
