View Full Version : How long to QT?

I got a new fish who is in a 10 gallon tank with a gourami so that if he is sick it won't spread in the main tank. When can I move him over? If he is fine should I wait say 2 weeks?

If you trust the store and they seem to have healthy fish most of the time, than I recomend 2 weeks maybe a little less. If not, I would QT for a minimum of 3 weeks to a month. (You may want to do a full month just to be safe even with a trusted store, especially if your tanks is fully stocked or has expensive fish).

I can usually trust the store's fish quality. When I got my gourami I almost got one out of a tank with ick. Good thing I know the signs of ick.

I QT for one month no matter where the fish comes from.

The store you purchase from really doesn't matter because fish everywhere are delivered from outside sources. They may only be in the store one day before you decide to purchase one.

We quarantine for 40 days ... traditionalists I guess. ;-)

We've done if for less time, but once we ended up loosing the fish anyways to some kind of internal hemoraging ... at least it didn't spread.

I never used to quarantine fish before putting them in the tank and very rarely I've run into problems. I think I'll QT them for 3-4 weeks. 1 month. Thanks for the help. I fed them a sinking shrimp pellet last night. The gourami hasn't eaten as far as I know. The catfish ate a bit but there was still about half the pellet left this morning. Should I feed them a pellet every 2 days instead of 1?

80 gallon feeding- With old catfish- 1 half of algae wafer, 3 sinking shrimp pellets at night and flakes in morning? They seem to still eat it all without the 3 catfish but should I feed less now that the catfish are gone?
