Dark substrate and B. Rainbow color

Howdy,
I've read in various places that dark substrate will help bring out the best color in the rainbows. I also know that the rainbows can change their color seemingly at will. Is the dark substrate something that will cause them to change color rather instantaneously, or is it more that they will slowly develop richer colors over time if they live over darker colors?

rainbows adjust their colors pretty quickly once they are settled in. the dark background/substrate will enhance their colors.

My rainbow tank has a dark substrate and I think it enhances the colors of the fish. They do change colors as they turn and when the males are in the mood for fighting or spawning, they get a bright band across their heads and down their backs.

I think dark substrate enhances the color of all fish, frankly.

i've never not had my rainbows with dark gravel. i have black ecocomplete gravel and a black background, and i've always gotten compliments on the coloration of my fish.:22:
