I got this loach a while back,he's been in my tank for a while now, about a month or more.

it's got 4 tetras in it, and it's planted. 5.5 gal.

Should I add more friends for him .he's not eating (that I can see but alive!) and he only swims around at night once in a while and usually hides behind the marimo ball.

any suggestions? should I just return it to the store?

they do prefer groups so it is likely stressed because of that. However, they also need much bigger tanks. Assuming you don't have the money and the space for a bigger tank, adding more would be irresponsible. Returning it to the store would be the best thing for the fish.
