Where is a good place to buy driftwood?

Where can I find driftwood for free?

What species of driftwood is best for the tank? (Will sink, not rot, doesn't harm tank, ect...)

Post pictures of your Driftwood and other fish shelters!

Take a walk down a river and haul out what's sunk on the bottom. Leave the stuff that floats or it will float in your tank too. Only hardwoods sink. Pines, etc, are soft woods and not for fish tanks.

If you can scrub and boil it, fine. If you can not boil it, soak it in strong salt water to extract any bugs.

Dont use any green (not dry) wood. Dont use it if you can sink your thumbnail into it. No pines are suitable because of the resins present in the wood.

Driftwood you find should be treated with hot water to destroy any unwanted organisms being introduced into your tank. Be prepared for the possibility of tannins leeching into the water and staining it tea colored for a while. Activated carbon and water changes will clear this up eventually.

You got a lot of good advice here on finding and cleaning drift wood

I just wanted to mention that if you buy drift wood from a store, just make sure it’s not meant for a reptile terrarium. Not all of that wood is safe for a aquarium

If you decide to buy wood, Mopani is a good choice. It's not cheap but it will last a long time. Dr Foster+Smith has it on sale,
