I have mine on from 6:30-10:30 am, and then again from 5-11 pm.

That way, they are on when the kids and I are home. My husband is home all the time, but he doesn't love the fish like we do. :p

Mine are on at 7:30am and off about 9:30pm. I know this is a little long, and contributes to a little algae growth, but until I get a timer with dual settings, this is what I have. And my plants don't seem to mind. Eventually I would like to do an hour in the morning when they are fed and I can check the tank, then 2pm - 9:30pm

1:30-1:30, and even then I still find myself rushing to feed the fish two minutes before lights off .

The betta tank in the living room is 9-9, though.

On the 55 hex and 38 tall - on at 7:30 AM, off at 10 PM. Mind you, my lights are low wattage, if I had proper plant lights I would only run them 12 hours a day max. On the little Fluval Edge they are on at 7:30 AM off at 9 pm, on the 5 gallon they are on at 7:30 off at 8.

Im an all day man myself, I turn the lights on about 7am ish, and they are off about 9pm. . . though these last couple of days ive been easing up due to trying to keep the temp down, its sitting at about 90deg most of the day here.

Is there a recommended time frame for having lights on?

My lfs basically told me that anywhere from 3-6 hours max. I have mine going from 3pm until 9pm at the moment.

I might add an hour or two in the morning though.

My tanks are set up with a timer that turns them on for 4 hours then off for 4 hours. This way everyone's on a regular schedule but yet I get to see them no matter how I'm sleeping. Even though the tanks get a full 12 hours of light a day the algae has a hard time with the short photo periods so I don't really have too many algae issues.

This is a question I was thinking myself...I didnt realize everyone kept their lights on in the tank for so long...I figured during the day no light is needed, but around the evening time that is when you would want to turn on the lights just for entertainment purposes so to speak. Is there a reason everyone leaves the lights on during the day?

Regarding the moon light...I find it very visually nice during the nite, and provides a "natural" atmosphere for my fish. I lilke to spoil them thumbs2:

If you have planted tank, or are like me and have your tank away from the windows (or natural sunlight to stop algae growth.) I also never have my living room lights on till gets dark outside. But I also have planted tank.. so I keep em on for about 12 hours.

My fish also know its time to be feed when the lights come on :)

Some fish actually like the lights off as they can hide better. Your fish are just becoming more active when the lights go off.

6am - 10am
5pm - 8pm

I have an 8-diode night light that kicks in at 8pm. Dark enough to encourage the plants to release that stored up CO2 -- I hope -- just light enough so the fish can see where they're going in the dark.

I'm getting algae build up along the front of the tank from the lights, and they're a strong heat source, so I've added 2 tiny otocats to deal with the problem.

They would, if they stopped sucking everythign else but the glass algae!
