....does LFS = "local fish shop"?
I'm a bit lost sometimes with the definitons and acronyms around here.

Either licensed fish store/shop or local fish store/shop. I've always thought it was local though. Others say differently.

Here's another one, what does IF stand for? I've seen it used often, but can't for the life of me figure out what it stands for.

It is interesting to create our Community fish-related abbreviations, and post it on a permanent page. How about it?

In the context of aquarium talk of course. I assumed it meant "independent fishstore", i.e. not one of the big chains, but this doesn't always fit. I don't have a specific example in mind, but I've seen it fairly often and would like to know what it stands for.

UGF=undergravel gravel filter
But like you, some of the abbreviations stump me. I have no idea of what people mean at times since I can't read minds. If people abbreviate after a discussion has started and we know what the topic is about is one thing. To start the conversion with abbeviations leaves me wondering what they're talking about.

PWC - Partial Water Change.
I see "water change" thrown around all the time and I always worry that a newbie will consider that a 100% water change instead of a PWC so I started using PWC (preferably no more than 25% PWC) a few years ago.
