I give you the product of extreme scavenging, insomnia, and its resultant late-night boredom:

Project budget: $0
Project cost: $0
Inspiration: ZeroEdge (http://www.zeroedgeaquarium.com/)
Equipment list: 1G piece of junk acrylic tank; unused small fountain pump; super soaker something or other; plastic storage tub; and...drum roll...DREMEL TOOL!
Since this was successful, it may serve as a prototype for a 3 Gallon Deco Kit (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15494&N=2004+62760) mod. With a more powerful pump, the ugly center rod would be unnecessary. It has to be there because the fountain pump doesn't push enough head to pump water straight into the tank against the pressure. Because of the tube, it is more of an ATO than a true sump, there really isn't any circulation in the tank. I am thinking maybe a Fluval internal filter would be able to act as pump and filter using the design for a true sump.
Detailed log with PICS to come...too lazy right now.
