Are they hiding behind the filter or what is that?

That is the heater...it is submersible...which I like much better than the over the tank ones where you have to make sure the water level is at the tip top! Later I found one of the kuhlis wrapped around a suction cup! These guys are so cool!

When i set up another community tank i plan to have a school of kuhlis

Ok. and I agree with you. Only use submersible heaters.
