I found a really good deal on two Jack Dempseys (about 5” in size) but I don’t think I would be able to keep them in a suitable tank for when they are fully grown. I’ve found a lot of info on the net that says you can keep two JDs in a 55 gallon but I have my doubts that would be a good idea.

Is a 55 gallon too small of a tank for two Jack Dempseys ? I know they can get up to 10” long and a 55 gallon is 13” wide. Would that be too tight for them to comfortably turn around in?

If a 55 is too small, would a 75 gallon be the minimum size (18” wide) for a pair of JDs?

A 55g would be tight, and unless they're a mated pair, I wouldn't do 2 of them. 75g would be much better, but again, make sure it's a mated pair. They're not named after a famous boxer for nothing.

And what's a "good deal" on JDs? I know you can get them at Petsmart for about $10 or so and I've seen some at that size.

A LFS has 4 of them they have not been able to sell for over a year. People have tried to buy, but they won't sell them to someone who wants to put them in a 20 gallon community tank !

They offered me $5 for pair of them. I wasn't too sure if I could do that in a 55 gallon, sounds like I can't

Thank for the info Lab

If they're paired up already you could house them in a 55g temporarily. That is a good price if they're a nice looking pair.

They are paired, and they look really nice (almost metalic blue). I haven't seen too many that look like that. That's why I was looking into them.

I'm just worried I won't be able to provide them a bigger home later on.

If I can't keep them in a 55 when they are fully grown, I'm going to pass on them.

Thanks for your help

Lol, you have better self control than me...I'd buy them then buy a 75g tank.

The thought of picking up a 75 gallon crossed my mind more than once. I was even thinking about asking the LFS guy for a discount on a 75, but after just buy a 90 gallon two months ago, I don’t have the cash for it. :scry:
