I just spotted about 9 (but there could be more) fry that seem to have been born just a few hours ago.

A few things I've noticed about the guppies and their fry:

There are six fully grown females in the tank and 3 female fry born last month. The adult females always hide when I come close to the tank but the fry will just go about their business. Why are the adults so shy and the fry not at all?

Also, I'm not sure who dropped either batch of fry but there's one female guppy, the largest and most colorful, who always hangs out in the plants with the fry for the first few days when they are born. It's possible that she is the mother or both drops since they are about a month apart but why does this female seem to be protecting the young fry like this? I didn't think guppies did that.

On another note, will my clown loaches eat the smaller fry? They haven't been bothering the one month old fry. Then again, I never see any of the four clown loaches come out from under the rock except on rare occasion. (I've only had them for about a week.)

Your female is just resting up with the fry in a quiet spot after giveing birth. I don't think your clowns will bother them as long as they are feed enough.

Keep the adults well fed and the babies will be okay.
