I’ve seen my BN plecos do some really weird things before, but nothing like this… ever. After having moved my BN pleco into my 90 tank just yesterday, I was expecting him/her to find a little hiding spot and make it his own. Apparently he did not like the ABS caves or all of the hiding spots I made in the tank with the drift wood.

This pleco started digging out his own little hiding spot around 3pm today. I would expect this type of behaviour from a ground squirrel, but not a pleco. He dug himself a little hole in front of the ABS cave and is spending most of his time in there.

I just had to post a few pics of anyone wouldn’t think I was loosing my mind

Yep, funny guy. They accualy prefer about a 1 1/2" or so for their caves, especialy when spawning. In the wild they dig into the side of mud banks.

Thanks for the replies guys

I know it makes perfect sense for a pleco to dig in like that, but I've just never had one do it in the 10 years I've had plecos. My past pleco's behaviour could have been not very normal as they didn't get as good of care as my current ones get. Many of those tanks in the past had sand in them so they could dig, but they just chose not to.

It really remonds me of a gopher. There's even a pile of substraight around the open to his cave.

my BN Pleco digs under the driftwood, then the corys come along and close things back up. I don't think he likes them...

Very cool. He wants what he wants, your caves were not up to snuff.

Same with my featherfin. I make him a nice spot for a cave and he goes somewhere else and makes his own. They like to do their own decorating.

It's the stuff like this that can make the tank that much more interesting to watch.
