# Metynnis argenteus is an egg scatterer.
# Breeding is only possible in a large, shallow tank.
# In the wild Silver Dollars often spawn in schools.
# For breeding, the following water values are recommended:

* pH 6.0-6.5, hardness of 4-8 dH, and temperature 27-28oC.

# Use floating plants and slightly dimmed light.
# About 2000 eggs are produced by each female.
# The eggs fall to the bottom.
# Remove the adult fish after the spawning as they will eat the eggs.
# The fry hatch in 3 days, and are free swimming after 6-9 days.
# They first eat plankton, but later, will take vegetable flakes.
# Breeding is difficult because of the volume of water needed for a group of fish to spawn.

The ideal habitat for Silver Dollars is to provide them with a large area to swim, as well as places to hide. Subdued lighting and dark gravel is recommended, as well as plenty of plants. When it comes to plants, they are vegetarian, so consider using the plastic variety. Otherwise be prepared for some casualties among your plant population. Water conditions are critical, if you are interested in breeding them. To breed Silver Dollars the best tip I can give is to use soft water. Although the parents will not eat the eggs other fish will, so they should not be bred in a community tank. The pair will spawn with very soft water at 80 degrees. The eggs drop to the bottom where they hatch about 3 days later.

A minimum of 30 gallons or larger community tank, I'd recommend beginning with a school of Silver Dollars. You'll find them an easy to care for, long lived, and peaceful. Good luck.

sorry it too me so long to reply. Thanks for your info... the things you mentioned about breeding silver dollars was very strange. sorry but we didnt intentionally breed our dollars, i suppose they were just happy enough to do so. we have 4. 1 male, 3 female they are in a deep 90 ltr tank with no floating weed or any natural live plants at all. only gravel, pot and artificle plant. but since the first brood now have live plants for the fry to hide in while we were trying to find what to do. before they started their mating dance they killed all the other tank friends, x2 clown loaches & x2 silver sharks that they had lived happily with for about 2 yrs. yes the little buggers do eat the eggs and fry. ours were actually moving rocks on the bottom of tank to get to the eggs. the trouble we are having is keeping the fry alive in the other tank away from mum & dad.
