could be my new pet!

Someone 5 houses down from me is having a garage sale. They had tons of moose antlers, a light with enough watts to grow pot (they even said it was for weed), and other stuff. Ive always wanted a hamster, but never got around to it. they had a hamster cage for 5$, and i bought it.

Ive had guinea pigs and bunnies before, but never hamsters. are they easy to care for?

yeah. The only thing that sucks about them, is that they live for like..less than a year..

They are stupidly easy to care for. Larger breeds live longer. I had a teddy bear hamster for 6 years. Get a male, females bite.

If you get a healthy hamster to begin with, expect a 3 year lifespan.

I think females make better pets.

Some hamsters are just mean and miserable. In fact, I'd go as far as saying most hamsters are mean and miserable. Some attack. Esp. the Russians. The nice thing about the Russians is that you can have several of them, given you have the space. They hang out together and the group dyamics add A LOT to the fun of watching them.

Of the larger hamsters, I've found the 'natural' coloured brown ones to be friendlier than some other colours such as the panda or the blackbear...

Long-haired brown and white seem to be friendlier too.

My overall advice? Get a group of 3-4 gerbils.

Or 3-4 female mice.

Or a pair of rats (same sex).

I don't like hamsters, but I don't want to see them end up as dinner either...

lol, rats are out. alberta banned them and there are guaranteed 0 rats in alberta to prevent plagues.

What about panda or black bear hamsters? are they good?

The color is not going to determine the temperment of your hamster, buy a young one, they will be skiddish at first but handle them alot and they will be come very friendly. I have had two regular Not teddy bear hamsters, both VERY friendly.
I also currently have 2 rats and have never had a pet with so many health problems. Rats are friendly, again if you get them young and socialize with them a lot but I would not ever recommend keeping a rat in a hampster cage.

So back to the hamster, watch out for wet tail, don't use pine shavings, only aspen and HAVE FUN, they are very fun, I miss mine everyday.

Enjoy.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I am more of a reptile/furry friend educator than a fish educator :)
I took a vet assistance course as well.

thanks!

Since ive got experience with the rabbits and guinea pigs, i think i'll be fine. I built my guinea pigs and rabbit a HUGE custom cage using plastic sheeting and wire grate used for shelving, and their cage took half my living room, but they loved it. The only bad thing was mr. bunny figured out how to jump out, and he had a few adventures in the house.
