Hi,

I added 1/2 teaspoon of salt in my aquarium today and three of the guppies immediately started darting around the tank and now they have clamped fins and are cruising the surface of the water (they still eat though). Is this harmful for them or do they simply have to get used to the salinity?
My other 3 guppies are doing fine and are acting normally.

Also, I bought some feeder guppies today because I felt sorry for them at the fish store and they are in isolation. how long do you think it's necessary to isolate these fish before they can be introduced to the main tank? They are treated with salt as well and are eating well, pretty active but rather skinny...

Why did you add the salt in the first place? What kind of salt was it?

Guppys shouldn't be bothered by FW aquarium salt, if the right amount is added.

It was aquarium salt. I added it because one of the males had a bite on his tail and there was some black edges (fin rot?). Well, that male is ok now and swimming fine. And it was aquarium salt.
I also read on these boards somewhere that salt stimulates guppy reproduction so I decided to try it.

Guppies do not need salt in their tank and very few others do, either.

In my opinion, freshwater is freshwater.
Salt should only be used for Brackish and Marine aquariums.

As for it having healing or preventative qualities, meh.
Clean water is the only good medicine out there.

And haha, guppies most certainly do not need to be stimulated into reproducing.
They will constantly be at it, so long as there's a female to stick it to.

Just an update... these guppies are doing a lot better now! Their fins aren't clamped together anymore!
